As the Paris Olympics unfold in full swing, the hosts can’t help but reminisce about the 2008 Beijing Olympics—a grand spectacle, a moment in history that will never return. This episode is dedicated to a figure closely tied to that era: Qigang Chen, the music director of the Beijing Olympics.
Until earlier this year, I knew little about Chen’s personal life. It was by chance that I came across his memoir Sadness and Joy Come from the Same Source, and I was deeply moved by the extraordinary life he describes. This led me to seek out his interviews, where his reflections on art, culture, and style offered valuable insights. Although not a household name, his works have left an indelible mark, and I wanted to share his story with our audience.
Qigang Chen is a contemporary avant-garde composer whose works include the Beijing Olympics theme song You and Me, film scores for The Flowers of War and Coming Home, as well as orchestral compositions like Instants d’un Opéra de Pékin and Wu Xing (The Five Elements), which have won numerous international awards.

Throughout his life, Chen has remained composed and unwavering, refusing to compromise his artistic integrity for worldly recognition. His dedication has been a source of strength and inspiration for me. In his earlier years, he contributed significantly to the preservation of Chinese musical traditions, supported young composers, and engaged in philanthropic work. However, his later years have been marked by personal tragedy—losing his son at 60, being diagnosed with cancer at 67. Now at 72, he resides in a secluded retreat, Geng Academy, in Huangniling Village, Lishui, Zhejiang, where he battles illness in quiet solitude. His life has been a journey of soaring highs and devastating lows. He once said that happiness always comes hand in hand with suffering, that everything will eventually fade to dust, leaving only the struggle to fulfill one’s ideals and to survive. This philosophy is at the heart of his memoir Sadness and Joy Come from the Same Source.
We sincerely wish Mr. Chen good health and peace.
