1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

There is an urban legend surrounding a very old but still used rairoad trestle in Kentucky which involves a mythical half-man, half-goatmonster that lures people onto the 100 foot-high trestle where they are caught in the headlights of a fast-moving train and are left with a run, jump, or die response that usually ends in a quick death.

The story of the non-existent monster, its appeal to youth, and its growing number of victims follows.

Warning: do not chase this legend.

In Texas, Friday night lights herald the local high school football games and that's when life really begins in small town Texas. In West Texas, there are other lights- much more mysterious lights, which have been spotted in the mountains outside of Marfa, Texas, for over 100 years. These are called The Marfa Lights, and they are the subject of lots of stories and urban legends. This is the story of the Marfa Lights.

In the 30's, 40', and 50's, "white lightning', or strong mountain brewed whiskey, was an important revneue source for the mountain communities in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. But getting it out of the stills and down to the thirsty cities was tricky, as G-Men (revenue agents) did their best to put a stop on the distribution. Getting past the feds meant fast cars, fearless drivers, and some very top engineers capable of creating cars which could carry a ton a whiskey yet still make corners at high speeds and outrun their pursuers. In 1958 a movie called Thunder Road starring Robert Mitchum came out telling the story of a legend of a famous purportted incident in which a mountain boy, urged by his distiller father to make one last run, lost his life by crashing a roadblock and piling into a trnsformer station outside of Knoxville, Tennesee. This is the fascinating story of the Legend, the song that Mitchum wrote for the movie that he starred in and mostly directed, the effect that the movie had on the South and moonshiners in general, and how the hot cars, the chases down those dark, twisting back roads, and the movie all came together to birth NASCAR. #Nascar #ThunderRoad #RobertMitchum

Great link for those who want the full story:"The Murder of George Wythe" https://wythepedia.wm.edu/index.php/Murder_of_George_Wythe

Title page from Boyd and Hemphill's pamphlet reprint, The Murder of George Wythe: Two Essays (Williamsburg, VA: Institute of Early American History and Culture, 1955). Julian P. Boyd (1903 – 1980), renowned editor of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, contributed to a special issue of The William and Mary Quarterly in October, 1955. The issue was published in recognition of the Marshall-Wythe celebration at the College of William & Mary Law School on September 25, 1954, for the bicentennial of John Marshall's birth. The journal pairs Boyd's essay on "The Murder of George Wythe,"[1] with another by W. Edwin Hemphill, "Examinations of George Wythe Swinney for Forgery and Murder."[2] Hemphill had rediscovered witness testimony given for Sweeney's murder trial in 1806, and both authors made use of this new information.

Boyd and Hemphill's work was published as a pamphlet reprint the same year, under the title: The Murder of George Wythe: Two Essays (Williamsburg, VA: Institute of Early American History and Culture, 1955).

Article text, October 1955 Page 513 The Murder of George Wythe Julian P. Boyd*

The murder of George Wythe was, in the deeply-felt words of his greatest student and admirer, Thomas Jefferson, "such an instance of depravity [as] has been hitherto known to us only in the fables of the poets."[3] Few if any crimes have so greatly aroused the inhabitants of Virginia. Popular indignation rose to fever pitch, for the circumstances of the crime left no room for divided feelings. The murderer was the grandnephew and residuary legatee of the Chancellor, a favored beneficiary of Wythe's many acts of kindness and generosity. He was young, apparently reckless, no doubt a gambler and spendthrift, and certainly a callous ingrate. Wythe was eighty years old, universally beloved, and too generously trusting to be suspicious of those closest to him. The story is worth telling, though it is unrelieved in its grimness, because history, no less than judicial process, took a strange course in its attitude toward this brutal crime and its perpetrator.

There are ten generations which have been given names, and these date back to births starting in 1890. The naming of generations is a sort of haphazard process, and is usually , but not always, predicated upon a book title such as 'The Greatest Generation' or 'Generation X'. In this story we discuss all the named generations, how they got their names, why and to whom they are important, and the characteristics common to those born into those generations. You should find it interesting as to how well the characteristics match those of you and your family.

In part two of "Our Canine Heroes" we cover search and rescue (and K-9) training, where rescue dogs w,ee first employed), life-saving stories, diffent types of rescue dogs: did you know some dogs are trained specifically to sniff out drowning victims in water as deep as 40 feet? We explain how this is done. They were very busy in Texas this past year with flood victims, giving closure to many familys.

And there are many more specially trained rescue dogs- some trained to sniff out their master's oncoming seizure before it happens and lead them to a predestined safe spot. Others are trained for a wide variety of rescues and searches.

Here is a video of "Air Scent" dogs trained to find drowning victims: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS1HooroM10

The explosive true story of the Green Berets heroic role fighting the top-secret war in Cambodia, Laos, and North Vietnam in the late sixties as told by one of the few who survived it- John Stryker "Tilt" Meyer, author of Across The Fence-The Secret War in Vietnam. HONORING OUR NATIONS HEROES: This is the first of two Veteran's day interviews we did. Our guest here is Green Beret John Stryker Meyer, author of Across The Fence: The Secret War in Vietnam, which tells the story of the special forces operators who volunteered to be dropped into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam to monitor and hamper the movements of the attacking North Vietnamese Army as they brought hundreds of thousands of soldiers and weapons down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The mission of these Green Berets and their courageous South Vietnamese Special Forces counterparts was secret and deadly- the deadliest fighting done in that war. This is his story.

In this episode, part 3A of a two episode "Our Canine Heroes"installment, we share actual stories of hero rescue dogs and why search and rescue relies so heavily upon them, especially when time is critical in saving lives. We also discuss the 2022 movie 'Rescued By Ruby', a family-friendly movie about a state policeman who desperately wanted to partner with a search and rescue dog but had been turned down bercause of a physical condition.

We chose to illustrate the movie because it shows how SAR dogs are trained and how the dog and master need to pass a series of tests to qualify for the honor of becoming a team.
