  • MYSTERY: THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR.HYDE (CHAPTER 1 AND 2) by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON at 1001 ADVENTURE AND MYSTERY STORIES FOR THE ROAD
SHOW NOTES — The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Chapter 1 Another classic adventure at 1001 Adventure and Mystery Stories For the Road

Narrated by Jon Hagadorn, Master Storyteller

Chapter 1: "Story of the Door" — Summary

Our story opens on a fog‑shrouded London street as Mr. Utterson, a quiet, steady lawyer, walks with his cousin Mr. Enfield. Enfield recounts a disturbing incident he once witnessed: a small, deformed man calmly trampling a young girl in the street, then paying off the family with a check drawn from the account of the highly respected Dr. Henry Jekyll.

The contrast between the man's sinister appearance and the reputable name on the check plants the first seed of mystery. Utterson, who knows Jekyll well, is troubled. Why would a man like Jekyll be connected to someone as unsettling as this Mr. Hyde?

This opening chapter sets the tone: a respectable Victorian world hiding something dark beneath its polished surface.

SHOW NOTES — The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Chapter 2 Another classic adventure at 1001 Adventure and Mystery Stories For the Road

Narrated by Jon Hagadorn, Master Storyteller

Chapter 2: "Search for Mr. Hyde" — Summary

Haunted by Enfield's story, Mr. Utterson returns home and studies Dr. Jekyll's will—only to discover that Jekyll has left everything to this mysterious Mr. Hyde. Even more troubling, the will states that Hyde may step into Jekyll's life "in the event of his disappearance."

Determined to protect his friend, Utterson begins his own quiet investigation. He visits Hyde's address, waits in the shadows, and finally confronts the man himself. Hyde's appearance is unsettling—something about him inspires instant dislike and even fear. Yet Hyde possesses a key to Jekyll's home and speaks as though he has every right to be there.

Utterson leaves more disturbed than ever. The mystery deepens, and the respectable façade of London society begins to crack.

About the Creator: Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was one of the most versatile and imaginative writers of the 19th century. Born in Scotland, he battled lifelong illness yet produced an astonishing range of classics, including:

    • Treasure Island

    • Kidnapped

    • The Black Arrow

    • The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Stevenson wrote Jekyll and Hyde in a burst of inspiration—legend says he drafted the first version in just three days after a vivid nightmare. His wife reportedly urged him to rewrite it, and the second version became the masterpiece we know today.

    The Book's Success and Legacy

Published in 1886, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde became an immediate sensation. It sold tens of thousands of copies within months and quickly entered the public imagination as the definitive tale of dual identity and hidden evil.

    Its impact has been enormous:

    • Adapted into over 120 films, plays, and radio dramas

    • Inspired countless psychological and literary studies

    • Introduced the now‑universal phrase "a Jekyll and Hyde personality"

    • Remains one of the most influential gothic mysteries ever written

Stevenson's story continues to resonate because it explores a truth as old as humanity: the struggle between our better nature and the darker impulses we try to hide.

  • THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS

The old folk song and marching song "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is a song that, according to at least one researcher, credits the actions of a very brave young lady who was kidnapped from her hotel in Texas by Santa Anna's forces as they marched toward an expected battle with Sam Houston's forces in the area of San Jacinto. As the legend goes, Texas spies alerted her and asked if she could find a way to delay Santa Anna for a few hours so they could prepare their attack- which she did- helping to gain independence for Texas. The words "Yellow Rose", were originally taken from a black folk song in deference to the shade of her skin. Some take it as a slur for her mixed race origin- take note- that is not intended here., She was a hero to Texas and to many Americans who knew the origins of the song. Her name was Emily D. West.
