A mental health crisis, a death, and a coverup.

On January 12th, 2023 Walker County Deputies were called to the home of 33-year-old Anthony “Tony” Mitchell for a welfare check.

He was arrested and booked in the county jail.

Two weeks later, on January 26th, 2023, he was taken to Baptist Hospital and later pronounced deceased. The doctor who treated him said he died from hypothermia. 

Sheriff Nick Smith and Public Information Officer TJ Armstrong claimed Tony was alert and conscious when he left the jail. However leaked video surveillance from inside the jail told a different story.
