Breast Cancer Conversations

#126. Why is "How Are You?" Such A Weighted Question?

The question of "how are you? " used to be rather simple. The answer was always "I'm fine, how are you?" to which the person would usually say "I'm good," and the conversation would continue onto something like sports, our kiddos, or the weather. But today, with a breast cancer diagnosis, the question becomes even more nuanced and weighted. If a breast cancer friend of mine asks me how I'm doing, I naturally spur into a litany of aches and pains, the newest treatment I'm on, and when my follow up appointments are scheduled.

If a friend who doesn't have breast cancer asks me how I'm doing, I find myself at a crossroads of the usual "I'm fine, and you?" and then spewing out more details about my latest bowel movement than they cared to know.

How do we navigate the fine line of the weighted question: How Are You?

Welcome to the Conversation.
