Family Holiday Boundaries Worksheet
Understanding Boundaries

A boundary is a limit or rule you set for yourself in relationships. It defines what behavior you will or won't accept from others, and how you'll respond. Boundaries are not:

  • Threats or ultimatums
  • Ways to control others
  • Punishments
  • Boundaries differ from consequences in that:

    • Boundaries are rules you set for yourself
  • Consequences are actions you take when boundaries are crossed
  • Step 1: Identify Your Needs and Limits

Reflect on past family holiday experiences. List 3-5 situations that caused you stress or discomfort:

    1.
  •
  •
  •
  •
  • Step 2: Define Your Boundaries

For each situation, write a clear, simple boundary statement using "I" language:

    1. I will...
  • I won't...
  • I need...
  • I don't want...
  • It's not okay for...
  • Step 3: Communicate Your Boundaries

Practice expressing your boundaries calmly and directly. Write how you'll communicate each:

    1.
  •
  •
  •
  •
  • Step 4: Plan for Enforcement

For each boundary, decide on a consequence if it's not respected:

    1. If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
  • If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
  • If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
  • If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
  • If [boundary] is crossed, I will...
  • Step 5: Self-Care Strategies

List 3 self-care activities you can do during family gatherings to maintain your boundaries:

    1.
  •
  •
  • Step 6: Positive Affirmations

Write 3 positive affirmations to remind yourself of the importance of your boundaries:

    1. I have the right to...
  • My needs are important because...
  • Setting boundaries helps me...
  • Remember, setting and maintaining boundaries is a skill that takes practice. Be patient with yourself as you implement these changes
