  • Parent Well in our Digital World – Autism and I-Pads

    Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Margarita Daskalakis, a PCI Coach who parent coaches at High Functioning Family, a coaching company with an emphasis on family wellness.
Did you know that Autism Spectrum Disorders affect 1 in every 88 children? And 1 in every 54 boys? These children struggle so hard with basic communication that most of us take for granted. The i-pad has been proven to be an especially useful communication tool for children with autism. With a quick download many children can find their voice to communicate more effectively or with an instant touch find calming music to induce a self-soothing atmosphere for themselves.
I-pads for young children on the autism spectrum can engage youngsters in appropriately challenging mental problems or help them with sequencing, patterning, and categorizing—important thinking skills that they may not get to practice as much otherwise. Yet, like anything else, if the i-pad is used too much and the autistic child get depended on it, it could exacerbate problems, instead of resolving them.
Margarita Daskalakis, a PCI Coach who works through her company, High Functioning Family, found this out through personal experience. At first she was elated at what the i-pad enabled her autistic son to do. It also was a bonus that it freed her up considerably—she didn’t have to create interesting, appropriate worksheets for him, for instance—that was done through a quick download, saving her bunches of precious time. But the magic wore off fast as she observed her son becoming more and more dependent on the i-pad. She noticed that he began living solely for the time he would get with it. It was harder each day to stop him form time with the i-pad. He didn’t want to do anything else. Observing this, she went into a tizzy of anxiety—one that she found her way out of with determination and accurate information about screen technology and young children that she received at the Parent Coaching Institute. She eventually realized that the limitations and potentially harmful effects apply to autistic children as well and then was able to develop a workable “i-pad plan” for her son.
Margarita shares her moving story during this interview. She provides a roadmap for any parent with an autistic child on how to use i-pads most effectively for the child’s optimal development. Margarita shares from her mother’s heart and her expertise as a parent coach what worked best for her. She hopes it helps other parents find their unique pathway to the best and wisest uses of i-pads with autistic children.

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

I continue coaching Geri, mom of three boys, ages 13, 11, and 9 regarding self-management of their digital devices. This is our sixth session and we are in the midst of her action plan.
In our last session, we discussed ways the boys could wake themselves up in the morning, so that she could get more work done since Geri works out of her home and the morning is her best working time. Geri identified that as a first step in the boys learning to be in charge of themselves—a do-able place to begin before we tackle them being in charge of their devices.
In this session we learn that this simple “little thing” is making a huge difference in Geri’s morning routine and how much work she is able to get done. Often when we make a seemingly “small” change, it influences our kids and us in bigger ways than we imagined. This coaching session shows the power in those “little things” we do as parents to effect larger results.
(Listen to the five previous podcasts to catch up with Geri.)

  • Parent Well in our Digital World – Children and Creativity

    Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Diane Dreher, Ph.D., Professor of English and Associate Director of the Spirituality and Health Institute at Santa Clara University. Diane is a best-selling author and positive psychology coach whose latest book is Your Personal Renaissance: 12 Steps to Finding Your Life’s True Calling. Diane writes a regular blog for Psychology Today and offers personal coaching based on the latest research in positive psychology to help people create greater joy, meaning, and balance in their lives.

Did you ever buy a fancy toy for your child only to find him playing with the box the toy came in? I did. That happened often with my sons. Children are naturally creative, yet if glued to television or mesmerized by video games, they are not experiencing the type of personal agency they would if they actually created something. Screen technologies, though, don’t have to squeeze the creativity out of our kids. Research shows that with less screen time, children develop their creativity more fully—and then when they do use screen technologies, they use them for creative purposes. This is what we want for our children and teens—we want them to be in touch with their creativity—and to use it in all aspects of their lives—even with their digital devices.

Dr. Diane Dreher has researched creativity and creative people extensively. In her book, Your Personal Renaissance: 12 Steps to Finding Your Life’s True Calling Dr. Dreher summarizes the basic characteristics of the artists and writers of the Renaissance that were key to their immense creativity. In this interview she discusses three major qualities of creative people:

    1. Creative people are intrinsically motivated—they do what they do because they love doing it. They don’t need external rewards for a fulfilling life. In fact, their fulfillment comes from within.

    2. Creative people know and use their strengths. Adults who accomplish great things—innovators and visionaries—were in touch with their strengths as children and find that using their talents is their greatest joy.
    3. Creative people are mindful. They live in the present and can stay focused during the creative process—no matter how many distractions are in their lives. They don’t succumb!

Join me to learn more about these “top three qualities” and how parents can nurture them in their children—Yes, even in our digital age.

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

I continue coaching Geri, a mom of three sons, ages 9, 11, and 13 about their use of their digital devices. In the last session Geri uncovered her ideal life if her boys were in control of their electronics. In this ideal life Geri would feel more relaxed and have less anxiety and the boys would self-manage and be more motivated to do other things besides electronics.

To begin moving toward her ideal, Geri put together an ambitious summer plan that her boys accepted well—but now she’s wondering—did I make more work for myself after all? In this session I discuss that Summer Plan and how Geri might streamline and still see the results she wants.

(Listen to the four previous podcasts to catch up with Geri.)

  • Parent Well in our Digital World – Helping Schools with Digital Literacy

    Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well In a Media Age, talks with PCI Certified Parent Coach® Patricia Barros who is also a Lead Instructor with Parent Coach International. Patricia, a retired pediatrician, is the mother of three, ages 16, 10, and 6, and owns Insightful Parent Coaching in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Do you know if your child’s school provides media education or digital literacy classes? As teachers increase the time your child spends with computers, are they also making sure your child is learning how to make wise choices about how to use the Internet safely? And most importantly, do you know what kinds of safeguards your child’s school has in place to protect children from harmful Internet content?
Most schools want to work with parents to provide the best media/digital literacy education. And certainly most schools have rules, guidelines, and safeguards in place and are eager to share these with parents. Sometimes, however, parents have to make the first move.
Patricia Barros realized that her six year-old daughter was protected at school from unwanted Internet content when she used the Goggle search engine, for instance. But then her daughter expected to use Goggle at home—and well, that was another story. The extensive tech system the school had in place for protective entry onto Goggle was not so easy to implement in a family home. Realizing this, Patricia and another concerned mother initiated a productive meeting with the school principal. Listen in to hear the positive results of one mother’s leadership and determination for a win-win home-school partnership around media/digital issues. Inspiring!

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

Gloria continues coaching Geri, a mom of three sons, ages 9, 11, and 13 about their use of their digital devices. In this session (the fourth of 12 coaching sessions) Geri shares her ideal reality related to her sons’ use of their i-pads, i-pods, video games, and the Internet. She explains what she really wants—more than anything—and explains how that would feel if she experienced it. Articulating and feeling our dream means that we then can begin to work toward it. (Listen to the three previous podcasts to catch up with Geri.)

  • Parent Well in our Digital World – The Unconscious Effects of Advertising

    Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Douglas Gentile, Ph.D., Associate Professor at Iowa State University. Douglas Gentile is a developmental psychologist, an award-winning research scientist, educator, author, and one of the world’s leading experts on the effects of mass media on children, adolescents, and adults.

Did you know that the first 28 seconds of a 30 second commercial is used to set a very specific mood, to make us feel happy, relaxed, or maybe even jealous of those fabulous looking people we are watching? Advertisers knows how to engage our unconscious minds and our most primal feelings so that we are much more receptive to their messages. We are literally unconsciously driven to want their product from a deep feeling level. Rationality? Logic? Forget them. In fact, often the actual product being sold doesn’t appear until the last 5-10 seconds, as if an after thought.

Check out commercials with your kids sometime. While you watch, count the number of seconds until the product appears and then discuss what mood the images were aiming for. You can make the unconscious ploys more conscious for your kids. If you would like a free copy of Gloria’s 20 page resource guide: 100 Family Media Literacy Activities, just e-mail [email protected] with subject line: 100 Activities and you will receive engaging, fun activities like this for talking with kids of all ages about commercials and other content areas such as screen stereotypes and media violence.

In this podcast, Dr. Douglas Gentile discusses a few of the fascinating “psychological tricks” advertisers use, along with ways to arm our kids against their harmful effects. An engaging speaker as well as a respected scientist, Dr. Gentile has spent many years researching this topic. He has a wise and balanced approach to media issues and gives this cogent advice to parents: “Compared to factors such as environment, genetic predisposition and experience, the mass media is the most controllable risk factor when it comes to the formation of children’s negative behaviors and parents have the most power to decide on how best to keep this risk factor in check.” Amen to that!

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

Gloria continues coaching Geri, a mom of three sons, ages 9, 11, and 13 about use of their digital devices. In this session (the third of 12 coaching sessions) Gloria explores the strengths of Geri’s wonderful boys to put all their many positive qualities “on the table.” And Geri shares the insights she gained from a family camping trip without any electronics! (Listen to the two previous podcasts to catch up with Geri.)

  • Parent Well in our Digital World – Protect Your Parenting Identity™

    Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, talks with PCI Certified Parent Coach® Sheila Wenger about another type of “identity theft” in our digital age— our Parenting Identity. Sheila, the mother of twins, a boy and girl, currently age 7 and the owner of The Parent Partner is also a Lead Instructor with Parent Coach International.

Guess what universes and cells have in common? The very first thing they do as they emerge is to put a boundary around themselves—this boundary identifies them. In the embryo, for instance, certain cells become brain cells, others nerves, other livers, etc. etc. All the various cells know where they are going because they know who they are.

So if you know who you are as a parent in this digital world, you know where you are going. If you aren’t clear on your Parenting Identity it could result in more stress and countless frustrations. Why?

Without the anchor of who we are, we get blown away easily by everything coming at us—we aren’t grounded in what we believe and we are much more likely to “cave in” to nagging kids, peer pressure, and what Gloria refers to as the “industry-generated culture” in her book, Parenting Well in a Media Age.

When we are strong in Our Parenting Identity we have clarified our values and what is most meaningful to us and passed that information to our children, directly in clear communication and indirectly through our choices for them.

Parenting in our digital world becomes that much easier when we protect and nurture our Parenting Identity. Tune in for ways to do just that!

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

Gloria coaches Geri, a mom of three sons, ages 9, 11, and 13. In this session Gloria explores Geri’s strengths and helps her see how they support her strong Parenting Identity. This is the second coaching session in a series of 12 sessions. (Listen to the June 3 podcast to hear the first coaching session with Geri.)

  • Parent Well in our Digital World – Resolving Digital Dilemmas—from Toddlers to Teens

Part One: Gloria converses with Dr. Jane Healy, award winning author of several books including the international best seller, Your Child’s Growing Mind and her latest book, Different Learners: Identifying, Preventing, and Treating Your Child’s Learning Problems, about: Are I-Pads Really Good for Toddlers?

What can happen to the brains of young children with too much exposure to screen technologies? The answer isn’t pretty. In this conversation, Dr. Jane Healy, who was twice named “Educator of the Year” by Delta Kappa Gamma shares important new brain research that supports with certainty the claim: Early exposure to screens puts youngsters at risk for all sorts of learning problems and disadvantages such as hyperactivity, aggression, and even can promote the onset of ADD. Early exposure also reduces a child’s ability to be empathetic to others. Dr. Jane Healy has decades of experience helping parents with media issues. Her book, Endangered Minds, is a classic in the field. Dr. Healy explains the negative effects of early exposure to screen technologies in clear terms, while offering parents many practical ideas for supporting optimal brain development.

Young brains are easily conditioned. This is the key concept Jane and Gloria would like parents of young children to understand and take to heart when listening to this podcast. There is never a more crucial time for brain development than in the first few years of life. This podcast reminds parents of young children of the fragility of the young brain. Gloria and Jane give parents solid, scientific reasons to limit screens as much as possible for young children, thereby proactively encouraging moms and dads to parent well in our digital world.

Part Two: Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI), and developer of The PCI Coaching Model, coaches Geri, a mother of three boys, ages 13, 11, and 9. All the boys have their favorite electronic gadget that is driving Geri crazy.

This is the first session of 12 sessions of PCI Parent Coaching for Geri. In this session, Gloria gets a clearer picture of all of Geri’s frustrations and challenges. You probably can relate! Gloria listens attentively to Geri’s concerns and discusses the overview of the coaching Geri will receive in the upcoming weeks. Gloria gives Geri a surprising “homework” assignment.

  • 2012 Higher Love – Big Brother, Big Bother: What are you willing to Sacrifice?

What are you willing to sacrifice in the name of “safety?” Are we all being manipulated by Big Brother? More importantly, is it our fault? Sri and Kira dive into this one whole-heartedly! We’re on the verge of a new caste system—don’t you want to know how you fit into it?

“This Orwellian future—this Orwellian society—is coming up; it’s coming forward,” says Kira Raa. Or has it been with us all along? Many of us have noticed dramatic, and sometimes drastic, changes since the 9/11 attacks… Has the world just gone crazy? Or have these rallies around fear (or “security”) just gotten out of hand?

“The reality, Beloved Ones, is PAY ATTENTION!” says Kira. With attention spans getting shorter, it can be hard to focus, but we must pay attention to what’s happening to our world. But how can we do that? And why should we?

What is the true role of Big Brother? And how is it similar to that of a priest? You’re not going to want to miss the answer to this one! Sri and Kira provide insight that may change your daily routine—and very existence—forever.

Are you the leader or the one being led? What’s your role in this life?

Subconsciously, who has your attention? Is it the cannibals in the news? The so-called “zombie apocalypse?” Walmart?

“Certainly there are ‘powers that be’ working behind the scenes,” Sri says. “But this is not a show about that controversy… What we seek to stimulate in you is that you have choice, you have power, and there is a greater universe than what you might think.”

Big Brother? Big bother! Tune into 2012 Higher Love for one of the most intriguing podcasts you’ll hear all year. Get ready to get connected. Get ready to live your life free of manipulation.

  • 2012 Higher Love – Gossip, Facebook and Twitter: What are you really connected to?

Infomania isn’t just a cancelled television show—it’s the definition of a real issue! Every second of every day you are being bombarded with information that seeks to seal your attention…and your free will! What is this information overload of “news,” gossip, and social media doing to you? To society? Once again, Sri and Kira are here to ask the tough questions; and provide the answers you’ve been searching for.

Does our near future involve Human RFID chips and brain-computer implants? Are we at the dawning of a new age of “techno-humans?” What are we willing to do for the sake of technology and faster communication? What would you be willing to do?

“What we put our attention on is what defines our whole world,” says Sri. With attention spans dropping more rapidly every year, what we choose to dedicate our time to becomes even more complex and important. “Human being; human doing,” comments Kira. “What are we connected to? And how is it affecting us?”

“We, at least in the Western World, are being trained to lose attention…to lose interest,” says Sri. From the jarring promotional spots on the radio to the commercials on TV—you’re being trained to think in shorter segments. Even the description you’re reading right NOW has been broken up into small “easy to read” paragraphs! Sri and Kira want to know: With everything getting shorter and shorter—how can anyone possibly commit to long-term goals?

In the words of Kira Raa: “How do you know what you’re connected to, how can you stay connected to it, and how can you take that gift and make your life even more amazing, more bountiful, more financially successful…not tomorrow: Today!”

Are you ready for the answers? Set your smart phone down for a minute and tune into this intriguing, controversial show. Despite the reported decreased attention spans—we can guarantee that you’ll be thinking about this episode for hours after you’ve listened to it!
