  • Ole Miss Instant Reaction | 23 Personnel Podcast

Texas Tech was beat soundly by the Ole Miss Rebels in Houston to start the 2018 season. The Red Raiders were outplayed in all three phases of the game. Starting QB McLane Carter is injured and carted off the field in the first quarter and replaced by true freshman Alan Bowman.

The hyped defense wasn't anything to be excited about. They allowed a 200 yard rusher, the first for Ole Miss since 2010. The did force and recover one turnover.

The offense was iffy, even under Carter before he went down.

Penalties were down, but they were big, undisciplined - three targeting penalties. Several extended Ole Miss drives or ended Tech drives.

Tech will host Lamar next weekend, so the offense and QB should get some time to develop some chemistry if Carter's injury is as serious as it looked. The defense will need to buckle down and the special teams...woof.

It may be time to start adjusting 2018 W/L predictions

  • Disloyal Board of Regents, New Grad Transfer, and Games 7-12 Preseason Previews and Predictions - 027
Details emerge surrounding the "retirement" of Texas Tech Chancellor Robert Duncan. It would appear Rick Perry, a known TAMU Aggie, meddled in the affairs of Texas Tech and somehow convinced 5 of the 9 Regents on the Board to vote to remove Duncan as Chancellor. It would appear the Aggies are still scared to face any competition in anything they do.
Texas Tech signed contract extensions with several key coaches around the program, including Tim Tadlock. Tadlock's contract puts him in the upper realms of salaries for collegiate coaches, and continues to demonstrate the admin's faith and support of his program.
Defensive back grad transfer John Bonney announces he is leaving the Texas Longhorns and will play his final season of eligibility of the Red Raiders.
Games 7 - 12 of the 2018 football schedule are previewed and predicted, going Kansas through Baylor.

  • Previewing Games 1-6, Lubbock News, & Listener Questions - 026
We pilot our new recording setup in the 23 Personnel Podcast North HQ. With a little bit of an extended intro (emphasis on extended), we touch on the Reagor Dykes scandal, as well as the 2018-2019 Tech Basketball non conference schedule.
Ole Miss preview and prediction - 24:42
Lamar preview and prediction - 37:36
Houston preview and prediction - 39:29
Oklahoma State preview and prediction - 46:10
West Virginia preview and prediction - 52:39
TCU preview and prediction - 1:02:32
Listener questions included hypotheticals on how many wins we would require before wanting to sign an extension with Kingsbury; updated betting odds on who the starting QB may be; Ed Oliver vs TTU OL, take 2; our signature fashion as head coaches; and who we might want to replace Kingsbury if/when it came to it.

  • DCTF Review, Fall Camp Starts, Betting Odds on Starting QB - 025
We discuss our last break from the show before we dive into the 2018 show and how great it was to get away from cell reception for a week.
The Dave Campbell's Texas Football 2018 magazine/book was recently released and we discussed the Texas Tech preview. There is an interesting schedule prediction in terms of wins and losses that we disagree with. Lots of great content to carry us rabid college football fans to September 1.
Some great listener questions, including what our expectations should be if the Big 12 is indeed down this year (and why Tech maybe should expect more), and the betting odds on the starting Texas Tech QB for game one versus Ole Miss.
Michael is getting closer to cutting the cord with Suddenlink and moving into the "streaming-only" category as a media consumer. I'm probably not far behind.
Lubbock has agreed to start letting businesses set up breweries/pubs and Michael is all about this move.

  • Mailbag - What are we most excited/scared about, Cord Cutter's Corner, what we learned - 024
In the mailbag this week, we're asked if Putin will interfere with the Big 12 race this season, and how OU is the face of Russian propaganda. We discuss what we're most excited and scared about for the 2018 football season. Finally, most teams do not deviate more than 2 games +/- in terms of W/L record from season to season and we're asked to project where we think Tech will land in that spectrum for 2018.
Michael takes us through his inital steps of cutting the cord and moving to a full streaming service instead of cable.
Lastly, we discuss Oklahoma State announcing that they will sell beer at all of their athletic events and whether we think Tech should follow suit, and how Lubbock will be getting a Cheesecake Factory in possibly the worst location.

  • Texas Tech and Big 12 Media Days - 024
Christmas in July! We discuss our favorite Christmas movies and how Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie.
Tim Tadlock was named D1Baseball Coach of the Year. Gabe Holt received yet another honor for his 2018 campaign as he was selected to Baseball America's First Team Freshman All-American Team.
Two more basketball players have signed professional contracts overseas. Chris Beard also was overseas to see Davide Moretti play for the Italian national team.
Big 12 Media Days was this week and Texas Tech was represented by Dakota Allen, Travis Bruffy, JaDeion High and JahShawn Johnson. Tech had three players (all defensive) selected to the Preseason All Big 12 team and a certain Texas homer is butthurt about it. We also talk about the episode of the Comeback S2N podast where hosts Erik Burkhart and Johnny Manziel interview Kliff Kingsbury.
Unfortunately, Gabe Rivera passed away and we talk about what a generational talent he was, even though none of us were able to see him play in person.
