  • 3' grezzi Ep. 438 La luna (piena)
Tutti i link a fondo pagina.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]
Eh? Se come me ci avete provato, avrete visto che in foto viene piccolissima, normale. Ecco, quella cosa lì è perché c'è l'illusione della luna. Vi spiego come funziona.
Buona luna a tutte e a tutti.

    Translation
That the full moon has an effect on me, I realized it when I was about thirty. I had the bed leaning against the window, it was high enough so that I didn't run the risk of people seeing me, but there was this strange thing that when there was a full moon, the light of the moon completely submerged me and illuminated the whole room. It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally put two and two together and realized that every month when there was a full moon, I slept horribly and had very restless dreams. I solved the problem by moving the bed and putting up some curtains, but I still have the fascination for the moon and for the effects it has.

Now I've found a scientific article that explains how we used to be connected to the moon when there was a full moon, of course it refers to when there was no electricity, now it's much more difficult to understand the cycles of the moon, because unless we really pay attention to it, that is, unless we check the calendar, the moon can only be seen once it has passed the buildings, and often we can't even see it because with the light pollution of the cities, the sky is no longer as black as it used to be, the night sky is now colour of water and anise, if you will allow me this cultured quote [it's the line from a song by Paolo Conte].

Speaking of the moon on the horizon, thanks to my son's psychology exam, I overheard as he was reviewing, I discovered the illusion of the moon. I'll tell you what it is.

You know when you see the moon that has just popped up on the horizon and it's huge, gigantic? Have you ever tried to photograph it? Huh? If you tried like me, you will have seen that in the picture it is very small, normal. Well, that thing there is because there is the illusion of the moon. I'll explain you how it works. Our brain knows that if we can see something at the horizon it means that it is a big thing, otherwise we will never be able to see it. So when we see the moon that has just risen on the horizon, our brain thinks ah if I can see it from here, it must be a big thing. However, when the moon rises, the brain is no longer influenced by the vicinity with the horizon, and when the moon rises up in the sky, there are no more terms of comparison, there is nothing left to compare it with and the moon then appears as it is, i.e. very small.

Think about that next time you see the moon at the horizon, whether it's big, gigantic, or small, and one interesting thing about this moon illusion, and this is the actual name, moon illusion, it's the fact that knowing it has no impact on how we see it. I mean I know it's an illusion, but my brain doesn't give a damn and keeps seeing it at that size. Eh, the tricks that the brain plays on us. Alright. Good moon to all of you!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 437 Chiunque (Anyone)
Fantastico! Link e info in fondo alla pagina.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]
OMG! OMG! OMG!

    TRANSLATION
OMG! OMG! OMG! I'm super excited because I've found a crazy app that allows me to talk to strangers. And BTW, I also have an e-mail address that says 'talktostrangers'. There's this app called Anyone, which I don't know how to define, if it's a social network or what, anyway you sign up, of course it's free, put your name, whatever you want to be called, and then put what are your interests, the things you want to talk about, and then you decide whom you want to talk to, and people are picked at random.

Then there's one... I haven't studied all the functions of the app very well yet, but the function I used is the one called 'butt-dial'. Usually 'butt-dial', which literally means dialing a phone number with your butt, when you have your phone in your back pocket, you sit down and accidentally dial a phone number. Well, there's a feature called 'butt-dial' in this app and so randomly, you say ok, I'm available to randomly talk to someone, and they make you randomly talk to someone.

So far I've used this function once and I've talked... Ah, one thing I haven't said is that conversations are strictly 5 minutes only, so nothing, let's say the risk is very low. You make yourself available for 5 minutes to talk to someone.

So far I have used this function once and I spoke for 5 minutes with Amara, a woman who lives in London and works in the theatre, or rather in musicals, she organizes musicals and what else? Yes, she's also a food anthropologist, and then she told me she's applying to collaborate on a podcast. I told a few things about myself, about what I do in Cagliari.

It's crazy because this app is exactly like this: you have 5 minutes to kill, you don't know what to do for 5 minutes? Put it on 'butt-dial' mode and we'll let you talk to someone for 5 minutes.

I find it absolutely exciting, also because you never know who's on the other end of the phone. And then, I repeat, the risk is very limited because after 5 minutes the conversation is automatically interrupted. I like this mode, I will use it again and then let you know about my adventures by talking to people on the other side of the world, or maybe even on this side of the world. I will keep you posted and informed.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 436 Temperature

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
The trees are beginning to sprout. Spring is in the air. When I was a child I didn't pay attention to these things. As a child the seasons were Christmas, my birthday - in early February - then carnival, Easter and summer.

When I was a child, summer lasted for many months, oh well, here it starts in May and ends in October. Summer always had a beautiful, golden light and the nights were, I don't know, an adjective to define nights, sweet comes to mind, but it's too poetic, so boh, oh well, anyway you get the picture.

When I was little we didn't talk about temperatures, we only talked about them in very rare cases, when there were records, like the hottest summer or the winter when the temperature maybe dropped to zero degrees at night, which in Cagliari is quite exceptional.

When did I start paying attention to temperatures? Definitely when I left Italy, because oh well, it's normal, it's something that comes spontaneously, you start comparing temperatures when you go to stay in a very cold place. Actually, I moved permanently to Berlin in the year of the coldest winter in Europe for I don't know how long, in Berlin the temperature had touched minus twenty degrees.

When I think about it now I get chills, actually I get popsicles in my nose because back then nobody really gave a damn, we went out anyway. I remember putting two pairs of sheer stockings under my jeans, very thin jeans, and that's it. All very exotic.

On the other hand, in Melbourne temperatures are a real religion because due to its geographical position, it is in front of a very very large gulf that overlooks the South Pole, while behind Melbourne has a gigantic desert, therefore there are sudden changes temperatures of even twenty degrees in just a few minutes. And you know it's coming, they call it the "cool change", the sudden cooling, but when you leave the house in the morning when it's already 32 degrees at 07:00 you can't bring yourself to take a jacket with you. And anyway, so you find yourself at five in the afternoon with your teeth chattering because in 20 minutes the temperature has gone from 39 degrees to 22 degrees.

And this is an episode from real life, it happened to me on one of my birthdays, that is at the beginning of February, therefore full summer in Melbourne, and the temperature was already very high early in the morning, I went out to go to work and at the end of work I went for drinks for my birthday and I came home soaked in rain shivering and shaking because the temperature had plummeted. Now I enjoy the mild and always the same weather in Cagliari.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 435 Pesca a mosca
Piccole creazioni coloratissime e affascinanti.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I'm not a fisherperson, maybe I've tried two or three times in my life to fish, always with friends who weren't great fisherpeople either, but we went on a trip somewhere, then someone pulled out the hook with a line, I threw it away and of course nothing happened, it was more of a pretext to do what we saw other people doing in movies and on television.

But there is one aspect of fishing that has always fascinated me. There is a part of the supermarkets that when I lived in Melbourne I always religiously went to visit, even if I'm not a fisherperson. It was that part of the supermarket dedicated to displaying flies. You may have seen flies, those kind of fake insects created with feathers, tiny balls and other colorful artificial things that are used for fly fishing.

As far as I know it is not very widespread here in Italy, even if, strangely enough, fly fishing was invented by the ancient Romans who used flies, I believe real ones, to fish. Since then, since the time of the ancient Romans, it has evolved a lot and in fact flies are real works of art.

I loved looking at them because they reminded me of the very colorful earrings of the 80s, but they are really fascinating. There is a whole philosophy, a story behind the use of flies for fishing, in fact the fly tying is really an art. They use bird feathers and artificial materials, but there is someone who even goes to steal, it happened, he stole specimens of stuffed birds from a museum to take the feathers and use them to do this fly fishing that requires a lot ability, because first of all it is necessary to know the alimentary habits of the fish, which insects they like, and then it is necessary to study these insects very carefully because evidently the fish then recognize one insect from the other. It's not that they are reproduced exactly, at least I don't think so, I believe that more than anything else you build something that recalls the colours.

I found on the internet an old book from the 19th century with some beautiful drawings of these types of flies for catching all types of fish imaginable, they are beautiful prints I imagine handmade, naturally handmade, I will put the link in the program notes at the bottom of the page. Watch it because you will take a journey into an unknown world.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 434 Lego (ancora)

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I haven't seen my husband for a few weeks. Yes, because my husband has locked himself up in the Lego room and spends every minute, every hour of the day building, unpacking, searching, putting away. He too was overwhelmed by the incredible force of attraction of Lego bricks.

I've always had a relationship with Legos that was somewhat through a third party. When I was a child, Lego was only given to "boys", so I was allowed to play with it when my brother played with it. Then, as an adult, one of the first things I bought my son was Lego bricks and luckily he was hooked, and he also knew that there were two requests to which I always said yes: books and Lego bricks .

I have already told you several times in my 3 raw minutes podcast of my great passion for Lego, above all not so much in the construction of things, but in manipulating, holding them in my hand, putting them in order, dividing them by colour, by shape, by function.

Here, now my husband has fallen into the Lego trap, I told you that I have about ten kilos, in fact, accumulated and transported from one continent to another, ask me how much it costs to ship Lego from Australia to Italy. Eh, but it was an important and due sacrifice.

Yes, for a few weeks now I practically don't see him anymore because as soon as he gets home from work he locks himself in the room, which has now become the Lego room, to build probable and improbable objects. He built a jeep, he is a car enthusiast, and he built it a bit by heart and a bit I think by looking at instructions on the internet. But I didn't even get to pick it up, almost, because he immediately took it apart, because he said no, no, no, it wasn't right, I'll build another one.

He still hasn't dedicated himself to rebuilding the jeep, but for a few days now he's been building a spaceship partly from memory and partly drawing inspiration from the internet. Oh God, by heart I don't know how much memory he has of spaceships, but he's trying hard, and every now and then I sneak into the Lego room, I look over his shoulder at what he's doing, because I'm terrified he'll build something beautiful and then he doesn't even let me see it because he's dissatisfied with the result.

Anyway, I notice that it is an incredibly therapeutic and relaxing activity and it relaxes me to hear the rustling of the Legos that are touched with the hands, mixed, searched, the little pieces that are never found, from the room where I am recording now, I closed the door, but if I open the door a little it almost seems to hear the backwash of the sea, the rustling. Shhh, shhh, shh, and I know someone over there is building a spaceship.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

If someone were to ask me what is the most useful thing you learned in school, I would not even think for a second and would say blind typing, without looking.

It's something I learned in high school. I went to technical school and, together with shorthand, one of the subjects in the first two years was typing. There was this room full of gigantic typewriters, very heavy, with mechanical buttons, and there we learned to write with a sheet of paper on the keyboard that covered our fingers, and we had to copy, page after page after page.

At the time it seemed like a rather stupid and useless exercise, however, I repeat, among all the things I learned in school, shorthand is not that useful because to write in shorthand you have to write word for word, while it is easier to take notes by summarizing or writing only the most important words, but blind typing is a truly priceless skill.

Then, while attending school, I bought , my parents also bought me a small portable typewriter, which unfortunately I no longer know where it ended up over the years. But typewriters, the mechanical ones, not the electronic ones, later on I also bought an electronic one which, I remember, I was living in Germany at the time, so it had a German keyboard, also because I used it to write my dissertation university degree, I majored in German so it also had a lot of German letters, I needed that typewriter necessarily. At the time it was still rare to write thesis on computers, so I bought this electronic typewriter, which even went back and erased automatically, which was a futuristic feature.

But the typewriters that have remained in my heart the most are the mechanical ones and I still like typewriters with their keyboard, so much so that some time ago I did the folly of buying myself a keyboard for the computer that resembles very closely the keyboard of a typewriter, the old ones, the ones I used at school when I was learning to type. And in fact it is also greenish in color, do you know that greenish typical of typewriters? And the keys are, I imagine, somehow connected to the computer electronically, also because I use bluetooth, but they are mechanical keys that also make a lot of noise when I hit them.

And I don't know, it gives me the impression I'm almost a Hemingway writing on his Remington. I find it pretty hard to write, because you need a bit of pressure, but it's worth it because I don't know, it's like a bird trill across the room when I type on my computer.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I don't know if Pantone has a blue called Future Blue I'll go check, also because I'm a big fan of Pantone colors, but surely blue is the color they show us when we talk about the future in the cinema, on television, predictions or simply talk about science fiction. For some reason blue was taken as a reference point. The future is filled with blue computer screens with blue lights. Think of the last Avatar movie, but also the first Avatar movie, little blue people and all things are blue. Then there are always the holograms that are three-dimensional and I'm not sure if these already exist, but I've looked into it and the big problem with holograms is keeping the light in one place, so that it doesn't spread as it does light does, precisely at the speed of light.

It is interesting how fantasies are chromatically characterized with respect to the epochs. In fact, if I say ok, now let's think about the prehistoric past, surely a scene with earth colors comes to mind, ochre, yellow, because they show it to us on television when reconstructing past landscapes. I remember that I was very struck when I read for the first time, by now known, everyone knows, when I read for the first time that the dinosaurs that we always see, I saw in primary school textbooks as these big green or at most gray, in fact they were very colorful and I think some of them also had feathers and fur. Imagine a big big dinosaur with nice, soft, soft fur.

I don't know, where is today going with the 3 raw minutes podcast? I do not know. I'm going so, very, very freewheeling because I was struck by an article I read that emphasized the fact that the future is blue and with holograms. Sometimes even in an exaggerated way these holograms are sometimes seen, I remember that in the film Minority Report, which by the way is a film that I really like, Tom Cruise was seen using these computers which were holograms projected in front of him, but they had these gigantic screens so to perform any operation he had to move his arms a lot, it looked like he was doing a ballet and I don't know, Tom, if you spend 8 hours working in front of a computer like this, doing these gigantic movements with hands over your shoulders, in the end you don't even need to go to the gym anymore because you'll have super toned muscles, you'll have done a lot of movement.

Oh well, I have 5 seconds left to tell you that yes, the future isn't blue, but the future is pink. Let's remember, it's pink.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Vero Sputnik? Vero Mazinga?

    TRANSLATION
My friend Alessandra challenged me, she sent me a photograph of a cat inside a box that also had other shapes inside, and this cat adhered perfectly inside the box, it fit perfectly, even though there was no space. Alessandra sent me the photo with the caption: "Let's see if your cats Sputnik and Mazinga are also good at doing these things here".

I replied that of course yes, Sputnik and Mazinga can do this and more. But this intrigued me, also because I have often reflected on the liquid nature of cats.

Don't laugh, I say liquid, and I really mean liquids and not solids. If you look up the definition of liquid, by liquid we mean a material that adapts perfectly to its container, and if you've ever held a cat in your arms, if you've ever seen a cat slip into a vase, in a very narrow space, you know very well what I'm talking about, because cats are not flexible, they are just liquid.

And if this makes you laugh, stop laughing immediately because not only I asked myself the question, but also a French physicist, Marc-Antoine Fardin, (did you notice my pronunciation?) Mr. Marc- Antoine Fardin with this question, that is whether cats are liquid or solid, won the Nobel Prize in 2017. No, not a real Nobel Prize, a rather particular Nobel Prize called the IG Nobel Prize, which pronounced like that means nothing, but if instead of IG you say IGNobel Prize, it makes sense. They are fake Nobel Prizes, silly, ignoble, which however are given to very serious research, seriously carried out by scientists. In fact, the IGNobel prizes are defined for those researches that when you first read the title, they make you laugh, but then make you think.

That's exactly the case with liquid cats. I did some research: why are cats so flexible? The key thing is that they have separate collarbones rather than being like us humans that we can't shrink our shoulders, cats have separate collarbones and then the shoulders are only held together by muscles, they don't have bones. And then cats also have a spine that has more bones than us humans, so they're a lot more flexible than us, because there's added flexibility at every joint in the spine.

These are the let's say technical-scientific explanations of why cats are so flexible, but nobody takes it from my mind that cats... the reason is that cats are liquids and not solids, therefore they should be classified in the liquid category. Right Sputnik? True Mazinga?

Intanto in Giappone...

    LINK in fondo alla pagina

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG Translation below]

Dovremmo imparare, no?

    TRANSLATION
Sardinia has the sad record of having the highest percentage of school dropouts in Italy, which means that it has a lot of boys and girls who do not finish compulsory schooling. The 2022 data speak of 13.2% of school dropouts, the European Union's goal is 9% by the year 2030. There is also a very high number of boys and girls who do not study and do not work, 23 .6%.

But so far what I've seen done by those in charge has left much to be desired. There is no way to entice boys and girls to stay in school, the curricula are outdated, not to mention the school buildings, the subjects that are offered, the way these subjects are offered, often by teachers that are worn out, underpaid, abused, or simply too old to teach, unable to acquire the new technologies that need to be used today.

On the other hand, what happens in Japan when thinking about school retention is completely different. In fact, in April 2022 last year, the high school for electronic sports opened in the center of Tokyo, in the Shibuya district: E-Sport High School, that is a high school where boys and girls are prepared for a future in the world of sport, but not only in traditional sports, also electronic ones, i.e. video games.

It is in fact a school that was designed precisely to combat early school leaving. Compulsory schooling in Japan only reaches the age of 15, and this school aims to make the boys and girls who leave school fall in love with school again. And it's a very particular school, it's a private high school that immediately distinguishes itself from other schools in Japan, which have very strict and sometimes with difficult to understand rules, the obligation to wear a uniform, to dress in a certain way, to comb their hair, to behave in a certain way, instead, for example, in the E-Sport High School students can dress as they want and also have a certain freedom in the starting time of the lessons, they can also arrive a little later, and in addition to the traditional subjects, there are also subjects for professional gamers, streamers, game commentators, programmers, writers, game analysts.

In short, it is a highly specialized high school that prepares young people for the future of what the world of work will be. As I often say, the jobs that our children and grandchildren will do still don't even have a name. And instead of demonizing electronic games and video games in Japan, these things are used to create jobs for the future. Shouldn't we learn from them?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Diverso servizio clienti.

    TRANSLATION
Two and a half years ago I bought a pair of eyeglasses to see up close, so for the computer, for reading. But I must say that I have used them very little, I started using them more or less six months ago, when I realized that I actually had a headache when I was in front of the computer a lot, in fact these glasses also have lenses that cut out the blue lights.

They are glasses that I paid a lot of money for my budget, because the frame alone cost me almost €300. They are very particular, they are round, they are metal, very showy, they have a very particular finish.

Well, a month ago, more or less, I realized that this very particular finish was chipped, in the sense that you can see it, it's losing the paint and you can see the metal underneath. So I went to the shop where I bought them, I said look at these glasses that I paid a lot of money they are already chipped after two years. Oh yes ma'am, I'm sorry but you bought them two and a half years ago they are no longer covered by the guarantee.

So I tried to contact the company that produces them, Occhiali Liò, a Venetian hand made company in Veneto, and on the site they boast about excellence, uniqueness, ethics, technical production competence, "The value of an object is given by what is behind." No my dears, the value of an object is given by what I paid them. And anyway they said no, we don't produce these glasses anymore, too bad, we are sorry. Then they contacted me again and sent me a photo of these glasses very similar to mine, they were made of metal, red, and then they had little silver clouds drawn on them, I don't know, but you know, horrible. And they said, look, we've got these, let us know. I said, oh well, let's say they are not the best, but I don't want to go around with chipped glasses because they are really ugly, you can see the metal, oh well, what shall I say? Send them to me. And they answered me like, ah well, perfect, if you let us have the direct contact of the shop, we'll send them to them, so he can buy them.

So, let me understand, you want tme to buy, that is, you think that I spend another 300€ to buy a frame that I don't even like, when I already know that the first one I bought has already chipped after two and a half years? I mean, you are not thinking clearly. Anyway, I was pretty disappinted and I said no thanks, keep them, I'll spend the money somewhere else.

Anyway why am I telling you? Because at the same time a company that produces an app for learning Japanese, Human Japanese, which I bought under COVID but now I can't find anymore, I can't find this app that costs €11, I think. I contacted the person who produced it, and the author, said I'm sorry, I'll send you another copy for free. Different customer service.
