Just when you think you know about leadership, Chief J. Taylor of the Pearland Fire Department steps into the studio and blows you away. A fascinating guest who's gone from being an NCAA Division I football referee to a fire chief, Taylor is not your typical leader. He brought to our conversation insights from his article in Firehouse Magazine,  and we chewed over the necessity of empathy, positive reinforcement, and accountability in leadership. Plus, we took a thrilling ride into why diverse thoughts and perspectives are key to innovation and growth.

What do football officiating and fire service have in common? According to Taylor, a lot more than you'd think. We delved into the parallels between the two, highlighting the vital importance of teamwork and accuracy in both fields. Taylor also shared stories from his unique journey, from the high-stakes world of football officiating to forming relationships with an array of individuals. Hearing how his father's advice to learn something new every day has guided his leadership style was truly inspiring.

And if all that wasn't enough, did you know Chief Taylor also had a passion for theatre and acting? Yep, you heard right. He shared his experiences in the world of acting, including his stint on the popular TV show Breaking Bad, and how acting has helped him in his fire service profession. We even shared a few laughs over some memorable firehouse pranks and his skill with a trombone. Wrapping up our chat, we discussed the power of mentorship, and how being available to help others can enrich our own lives too. Don't miss this inspiring and entertaining episode!

In this episode we sit down with Chief J. Taylor of the Pearland Fire Department to unpack his unique leadership style that's been sparking change and fanning growth. You'll get the inside scoop on how this fearless leader has been leveraging his team's talents to achieve great things, even in the Houston heat. And get this, his secret sauce involves a good cup of coffee and the power of an open dialogue. Intrigued? We thought so.

Now, let's shift gears a bit and talk about the art of preparation, collaboration, and the importance of sweating the small stuff. Remember that time when I shared my journey as a Division I football official? Well, the same principles apply here. You see, whether you're on the gridiron or in the firehouse, success is in the details. And speaking of details, we'll also explore the concept of normalization of deviance and how sticking to high standards can prevent it.

No, we're not done just yet! We've still got to tackle the power of trust and communication in a fire department, how to foster a familial atmosphere among the firefighters, and the challenge of balancing department needs with wanted extras. Plus, we'll share an inspiring story about Chief Johnson and his mandatory coffee meetings that has left a lasting impression. So, buckle up and get ready to ignite your leadership skills with insights from this fire-powered episode.

This FDIC was amazing! Each year I meet more and more awesome brothers and sisters! In this episode I talk to my brother from another mother, Dave Mellen:  David Mellen is a 20-year student of the fire service, currently serving as a career firefighter/paramedic with the Edwardsville, KS, Fire Department as well a captain with the Reno Township, KS, Volunteer Fire Department. Mellen is a lab instructor for the Johnson County Community College Fire Science program and has sat on several review committees for fire service training publications. He is also an instructor at Firehouse Expo, FDIC, and several other state and local fire schools in addition to being the owner of Valor Fire Training.  Eric Jones joined the fire service in 2006 and has served as a volunteer, part-time and full-time firefighter. Eric is currently a Captain and Training Officer with the Scottsburg Fire Department in southern Indiana. Captain Jones is passionate about continuing education and training in the fire service.

I started as volunteer FF in Spring Valley NY back when I turned 18 at Rockland Hook & Ladder Dept 17 (Also the same department where recently Jared Lloyd lost his life at Evergreen Terrace Apartments.) My parents decided to move after 9/11 as it affected my dads limo business and we came to North Carolina. In Carolina I found a volunteer department to join and remained an active volunteer for 13 years climbing to the rank of Asst Chief Of Training before I got married and moved. I got hired in Mooresville in 2007 while also remaining an active volunteer. I’ve been assigned to an Engine company for most of career until last year when I decided it was time for a change and transferred over to a Ladder company.
