During his 40 year military service Clay commanded at every level of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, served as the Deputy Commanding General of the Army Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, and was Director of Operations for the U.S. Special Operations Command in Florida. Since he retired in 2018, Clay has served as CEO and President of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides financial support for the education of children of fallen special operations soldiers.
