40. How To Decrease Noise Sensitivity Post Concussion: An Interview with Nate Benson about TOMAR

Listen Later

Noise sensitivity is one of the most common concerns of people suffering from post concussion syndrome. Sounds can feel overwhelming and prevent people from participating in activities they love, such as sporting events, concerts, youth camps, family gatherings, etc. Noise sensitivity can be devastating and significantly impact someone's functioning in their daily life. Join Nate Benson and me as we discuss the underlying causes of noise sensitivity, and ways that this problem can be addressed.

One significant way to address noise sensitivity is housed at CognitiveFX, a cutting-edge concussion clinic in Provo, UT. (www.cognitivefxusa.com) It is a machine called TOMAR (Tonotopic Map Regenerator) and was invented by Dr. Heath Lorzel, PhD, who was interviewed on this podcast in episode 35 (https://youtu.be/wTqpdlfJqV8). Dr. Lorzel also discovered that in addition to decreasing noise sensitivity for people dealing with post-concussion symptoms, this device could also be used to help people suffering from anosmia (loss of smell) from COVID-19. Nate shares some of the successes he's seen in working with people dealing with loss of smell by using TOMAR and smell training kits.
