Today’s question: I recently broke up with my partner. I am not sure it was the right decision and I feel I may never recover.
Answer: This is part of the human experience, it is a painful time. Many times the reasoning is not clear. What led you to end the relationship? This is an opportunity to reflect on your decision. This could lead to other questions, such as, is reconciliation an option, what were the reasons that led you to feel this way, was it a mutual decision?
It is hard to sit with uncertainty, people want a definitive answer. Maybe some are simply looking for validation. Maybe they simply want to hear that they made the right choice. At times when it isn't so clear, pain is felt.
Discernment therapy exists to help understand what has brought you to this point in the relationship. The purpose is to get to the reasons that are causing the thoughts to end a relationship. They are looking for the idea of certainty. One person may be leaning out but not certain they want to end it. Maybe if they get an answer they want, a definitive reason, that they did the right thing, the pain will be less.
Remember, it is okay to hurt. Be gentle with yourself, it is not only you. There are two people in this relationship. Be sure and take care of yourself. Take comfort in a hobby, friends, and focus on yourself. Many times the uncertain leads us to dwell on the negative but consider what led you to this decision.
