MEET JEAN:

Jean Lomino holds a Ph.D. in Leadership with an emphasis in Environmental Education. She has been an educator for over 50 years, in the classroom, grades 1-8, and as an adjunct professor for a Master’s Degree program in Outdoor Teacher Education. Jean served as Executive Director of Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center in Chattanooga TN, and in 2015 she co-founded Wauhatchie School, the first forest kindergarten in the state of Tennessee. It has expanded to four forest school sites in the Chattanooga area with an enrollment of over 200 students.

Jean is also the Founder and President of the Forest School Teacher Institute and has trained over 800 forest school teachers from the US, Canada, China, Korea, Italy and South Africa, including two months working with teachers at No Boundaries Forest Kindergarten in Guangzhou, China. In 2018 she collaborated with Dr. Jiyoun Shin, Vice-Chair of the Korean Forest Kindergarten Association, to conduct research concerning Character Development in Forest Kindergarten. Jean has been a presenter at conferences in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia. She was the US featured speaker at the 2019 International Symposium of Forest Kindergartens in Seoul, South Korea, and then again virtually in 2021. She also presented virtually for teachers in India and an international symposium in China.

Jean’s current projects include overseeing Nature Kin Farm and Forest School at Crabtree Farms in Chattanooga, Forest School teacher training at a number of public schools in the region, and conducting in-person training around the country. Her next training sessions will be in September— Nature Journaling in the CA Redwoods and Forest School Teacher training in Texas. She is also working on a book to be published before the end of the year.
