This week I am joined by Catherine Herling. She is a licensed family therapist and marriage counselor. She specializes in Neurodivergent Relationships.
This week we will be answering listener questions relating to her specialization with Neurodivergent Relationships.
Today’s question: Can you give me some tips on managing conflict with my partner? My partner is Neurodivergent and I am Neurotypical and I would love to know what we can do so that we can manage conflict that works for us.
Answer: All relationships naturally have conflict. Remember, we all think differently. Talking about small things, while they are small things. Remember we all have our quirks. Recognizing what the other person may be feeling.
Establishing routine is another important factor. Make sure you both have the same expectations. Make sure you are developing consistency. Have a check in time to make sure you are both on the same page. Transparency here is key.
Learning some things that are uncomfortable for your neurodivergent partner. What are their triggers? What are some quirks you have that may cause them discomfort? Learning these and being open to these quirks, can help you to better understand them.
