This week we will be discussing one of the most difficult cognitive distortions many people face. We are talking about “all or nothing thinking”.
Licensed Therapist Ashley Thorne defines this as “you only have two options and there is no gray area in between.” It is the thinking that you can’t be beautiful and have flaws, you can’t be successful and have failures. This thinking is that happiness can only be found if you are currently on the positive side.
Today we discuss accountability and forgiveness.
Accountability can be tricky. It may be that you want to be kind, or avoid conflict. The antithesis to this forgiveness.
These two can coexist. We can communicate the need for change while also forgiving someone for what has come to pass.
We do not have to punish someone or berate ourselves because behaviors need some changes. We should also forgive others and ourselves. Understand that mistakes are made. Forgiving others and self is progress.
Desmond Tutu states, “Forgiveness does not relieve someone of responsibility for what they have done. Forgiveness does not erase accountability. It is not about turning a blind eye or turning the other cheek. It is not about letting someone off the hook or saying it is okay to do something monstrous. Forgiveness is simply about understanding every one of us is both inherently good and inherently flawed. Within every hopeless situation and every seemingly hopeless person lies the possibility of transformation.”
