In this episode Jody shares all of the steps she took to get a diagnosis of PANS. It took a lot of doctors, a lot of medications, and some seriously challenging things for Jody.
Some of the things we cover are:
Expecting to see answers on an MRI and bloodwork
Asking for help from a provider that doesn’t “believe” in PANDAS or denies that it is real, even when there are positive tests for an infection with no typical signs of an infection
Providers still denying it, even when the antibiotics they prescribed getting rid of all symptoms
Finding out a cough was a tic
Never ending referrals to more specialists who don’t have answers but won’t talk about PANDAS
Never ending antibiotics that have diminishing returns
Jody feeling like maybe she is crazy and nothing was wrong, especially as doctors kept offering her excuses for why these sudden changes in her daughter were normal
Tonsils and adenoids and whether to remove them
Being told she didn’t have PANDAS even when strep was found and titers were elevated
Deciding to do the Cunningham panel (more details in the next episode!)
The frustration of seeing all the different providers and treating everything as if they were separate issues even though they came on all together
The challenge of taking a kid who could “hold it together” in the doctor’s office, making it look like Jody was crazy or making things up and getting accused of Munchausen-by-proxy
