Asha Degree was a "victim of homicide" and her body was "concealed," according to search warrant documentation obtained by WCNC Charlotte on Monday.
The FBI along with state and local investigators searched a Cleveland County property all last week in a decades-long search for Degree, who was 9 years old when she disappeared from Shelby, North Carolina in 2000. Until now, it was not known whether Degree was still alive.
The search warrants released on Monday provide new details in the updated search for Degree. In their documentation to the court, investigators said evidence was linked to the property on Cherryville Road in Shelby. That's where investigators last week recovered a car similar in make and model to one sought during the initial search in 2000.

WCNC Charlotte has learned that the man law enforcement sources have tied to an apparent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump has ties to Greensboro.
Law enforcement sources told the Associated Press that investigators arrested Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, on Sunday. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said a Secret Service agent spotted someone with a rifle at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach before opening fire.
Sheriff Bradshaw said the suspect fled the scene in an SUV as agents approached his position. Investigators found an AK-47 rifle, two backpacks and a GoPro Camera at the golf course. Routh was arrested without further incident after authorities tracked down his vehicle.
Voter registration records show Routh is registered to vote in North Carolina and listed a Greensboro address.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump launched campaign blitzes Thursday with dramatically different approaches to attracting swing-state voters who will decide the presidential contest.
In North Carolina, Democratic nominee Harris used rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro to tout endorsements from Republicans who have crossed the aisle to back her. She also promised to protect access to health care and abortion, while delighting her partisan crowds with celebrations of her debate performance Tuesday, taking digs at Trump and cheerleading for her campaign and the country.
In the border state of Arizona, the Republican Trump pitched a tax exemption on all overtime wages, adding it to his previous proposals to not tax tips or Social Security income. But the former president squeezed those proposals, along with a nonspecific pledge to lower housing costs, into a stemwinding speech marked by his most incendiary rhetoric on immigration and immigrants themselves, name-calling of Harris and others, and a dark, exaggerated portrait of a nation Trump insisted is in a freefall only he can reverse.

Happy Friday the 13th! A lot of folks think it's spooky when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday, but how exactly did this superstition get so popular? Historians aren't exactly sure, but they can say it started long before the 1980s horror movie franchise with the same name.

Federal agents executed multiple search warrants in Cleveland County late Tuesday into Wednesday.
The FBI said it assisted the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation as the agencies served warrants at multiple locations. The FBI hasn't released any further details about the investigation.
Multiple police vehicles surrounded a home off Cherryville Road near Spake Farms. Officers from multiple jurisdictions were on the scene, including the SBI. Cleveland County officials told WCNC Charlotte's Tradesha Woodard they planned on being at the home all night.
Neighbors who live nearby said they were alarmed when they noticed a heavy police presence on Tuesday. Residents said they're still trying to figure out exactly what's going on.

Monday marks a major deadline for the future of Charlotte's proposed Red Line commuter rail service. It's the last day city leaders can buy the tracks -- and the deal with Norfolk Southern is well underway as of Monday morning.
The city of Charlotte voted last Tuesday to acquire the railroad tracks and support a sales tax to fund the purchase for the project. Only one member of the Charlotte City Council, Tariq Bokhari, voted against the two resolutions. One of the measures was in support of the sales tax while the other approved the actual purchase of the necessary O-Line tracks from Southern Norfolk.

Breaking update: North Carolina will not be able to mail absentee ballots on Friday as scheduled because of a court order related to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s appeal to be removed from the ballot.
A previous decision by Wake County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Holt to deny the temporary restraining order sought by Kennedy was denied. The decision was appealed.
On Friday morning, the court ruled the North Carolina Board of Elections could not mail out ballots until the appeal is resolved.

North Carolina is set to be the first state to mail out absentee ballots, starting Friday.
While Election Day is on Nov. 5, many voters will choose to vote with absentee ballots or during early in-person voting.
Any registered North Carolina voter can request a mail-in ballot. Voters do not need to provide a reason to receive one. One thing that is different for this election, though, is that ballots must be received by the Board of Elections no later than the close of polls on Election Day at 7:30 p.m.
WCNC Charlotte spoke with Micheal Dickerson, the director of the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. Dickerson said he is confident about how prepared his office is for the upcoming elections.

Quinten Canty barely remembers a time before school shootings—and school lockdowns—were the norm.
"They'll go over the intercom and they'll say, 'lockdown, lockdown, lockdown'," Canty said. "What we're supposed to do is we're supposed to hide in the safest corner where no windows are or farthest away from the door. Some teachers encourage that we have people like holding desks and chairs."
Learning about school shootings, like Wednesday's shooting at a high school in Georgia, is an instance the junior at West Charlotte High School says is becoming too common.
"It's kind of like we're getting accustomed to it, and it's not supposed to feel like that," Canty said. "You're not supposed to get comfortable with knowing that there is violence occurring at your school."
Canty is involved in student government at his school to bring attention to issues like this—and the toll it can take on students' mental health.
