  • Families scrambling after charter school closes abruptly

The sudden closure of a Monroe charter school has left 160 students without a school and families trying to figure out the next steps.

The Apprentice Academy announced its sudden closure on Saturday. The school principal and chairman of the board cited a variety of reasons for the closure. Among those reasons, a Thursday visit from the fire marshal's office where the school learned their certificate of occupancy (CO) was expired.

"School administration had believed in good faith that the CO was valid as the school had previously occupied the same building and had a valid CO at that time with no expiration date on the documentation," school administration explained on it website. "The Fire Marshall informed Administration that the previous CO had actually expired when Apprentice Academy vacated the building in 2019."

  • Charlotte leaders to vote on $91M purchase of Red Line train tracks

The city of Charlotte could vote on Tuesday to proceed with a purchase of railroad tracks needed for the city's future Red Line commuter rail service.

Charlotte leaders have been considering whether to spend $91 million to purchase existing Norfolk Southern tracks between Charlotte and the northern suburb of Davidson. The tracks, which the freight railroad calls the O-Line, are part of the 2030 regional transit plan.

  • Here's why we celebrate Labor Day

Labor Day is about a lot more than just a day off work. There's a rich history behind why we celebrate it.

    Let's connect the dots.

In the late 1800s, the average person worked 12-hour days, seven days a week just to make ends meet. Sometimes, kids as young as five would work in factories and mines. The working conditions were extremely unsafe.

Then labor unions formed. They organized strikes and called employers to give them better hours and pay.

  • Lawsuit alleges foster children were 'abandoned' in hospital emergency rooms

A class action lawsuit filed on behalf of foster children accuses North Carolina of failing to provide adequate shelter and care for kids in need.

The lawsuit claims state officials failed to provide adequate supervision to the child welfare system, including installing improper leadership and providing inadequate resources.  The lawsuit specifically names at least three instances in Mecklenburg where children were abandoned in hospital emergency rooms. Furthermore, the lawsuit expands the scope and accuses "many County DSS of abandoning foster children in hospital emergency rooms with little agency contact and no educational or mental health services."

Charlotte Douglas International Airport will conduct what it calls a full-scale emergency exercise for much of Wednesday, but passengers shouldn't expect disruptions as they get to their flights.
