  • Johnson C. Smith University working to help hundreds of students remain enrolled

As Johnson C. Smith University prepares to welcome a record number of students to campus, a big barrier leaves hundreds of them sitting in limbo.

"Though many folks want to be here, under this new FAFSA they may not have received as much aid so that has generated a gap," Davida Haywood, the vice president of student affairs at the university, said.

Haywood said financial limitations, aid changes, delays, and glitches are also impacting families who may end up paying some out-of-pocket costs.

  • Residents in Gastonia concerned about microtransit system

Independence is a luxury Rose Ruiz Ocana said is cherished the most once you reach a certain age. Ocana said that’s why she uses the transportation app GoGastonia, a tool that she said enhanced her mobility -- until it didn’t. She  said she used the app to get to a location just fine, but when booking a trip back home things took a turn.

Ocana said it took 15 to 20 mins to get a ride, and she sat patiently, but the patience ran thin after waiting more than three and a half hours.

  • After 30 years, frustrations continue over Charlotte transit projects

Charlotte leaders held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon about the proposed one-cent sales tax to pay for transit and road projects and gave an update on purchasing the tracks needed for the Red Line commuter train to Lake Norman.

Charlotte City Council's transportation committee discussed draft legislation language enabling a countywide 1% sales tax to fund these projects and create a regional transit authority to oversee the spending. The meeting comes a day after Matthews leaders rejected the sales tax proposal, voicing frustration over long-discussed plans to extend light rail service to the town were changed to a rapid bus transit line along U.S. 74.

  • Town of Matthews votes against one-cent regional transit tax proposal

On Monday, Matthews town leaders voted against a new sales tax proposal to fund new regional transportation.

"While intended to improve regional transit, this plan fails to provide fair benefits to all communities," Matthews Town Commissioner Ken McCool wrote on social media this weekend.

Matthews officials had been optimistic that a long-discussed Silver Line train would run through east Charlotte and to Matthews. However, in May, town officials learned the plan was being cut back. The future train line would only be built between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Uptown Charlotte. A bus rapid transit line would be implemented from Charlotte to Matthews instead.

  • Weather Impact: Charlotte getting heavy rain and flooding as Debby drenches the Carolinas

Tropical Storm Debby made landfall in South Carolina early Thursday morning and is bringing the impacts of heavy rain and flash flooding to North Carolina.

Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich said while we can't rule out severe weather from Debby in the Charlotte area, the biggest impact so far is flooding. This threat is made worse by how slow Debby is moving north. Because it's crawling, the storm is dumping heavy rain for long periods.

A large portion of the Charlotte area is under a flash flood warning due to Debby's torrential rain. The flash flood warning is in effect for Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Stanly and Union counties in North Carolina, plus Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina.
