It will be a few more years before Charlotteans begin to see buildings go up for the long-awaited Brooklyn Village development. The project, a long time coming, still has a long way to go.
On Wednesday, the developers will give the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners an update on the $700 million project's progress.
The entire project will bring more than 1,200 apartments, including affordable housing, retail and office space. Yet the construction site sits empty as the project stalls once again.

A Gold Line station in Charlotte's Elizabeth neighborhood was destroyed by a crash over the weekend, transit officials said.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of East Eighth Street and Hawthorne Avenue, according to the Charlotte Area Transit System. The impact was so violent that the only things left standing were steel guardrails and the concrete platform. Glass from the station was scattered across the station with yellow caution tape being put up to keep people away.
CATS said the station will remain closed until further notice. Crews cleaned up the station on Monday to remove the leftover glass and debris. It's unclear when the station will be fully repaired and reopen.
Neighbors who walked through the area were shocked at what they saw.

Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas could see impacts in the days ahead from Hurricane Debby. This is the fourth storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
With the positioning of a high-pressure system to the west combined with a cold front to the north, Debby made landfall in Steinhatchee, Florida early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. Debby gained strength Sunday, becoming a hurricane before making landfall in Florida. Here's the latest breakdown of the storm's likely impacts on the Carolinas.

After a years-long debate over outer carrier vests, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is now allowing patrol officers to wear them without a doctor's note.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police said Police Chief Johnny Jennings has denied its requests to let patrol officers wear outer carrier vests for years. Only specialized units are allowed to wear the vests, and patrol officers can too with special permission due to medical reasons.
However, on Thursday, a department-wide email said all officers can now request a vest if they want one for preventative care and minor medical issues.
It’s unclear why Chief Johnny Jennings has changed his mind. He previously said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte that the vests raise safety concerns and make patrol officers look militarized.

A day after confirming he wouldn’t be a candidate for Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Tuesday at a public event that he’s excited that Democrats “have a lot of great options for her to choose from.”
Speaking in coastal Brunswick County with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan to celebrate federal funding for land conservation, Cooper reiterated his Monday message by saying "this was not the right time for our state or for me to potentially be on a national ticket.”
Cooper, barred by term limits from seeking reelection this year, had been among roughly a dozen potential contenders that Harris’ team was initially looking at for a vice presidential pick. He’s been a surrogate for President Joe Biden’s reelection bid and now for Harris.

Federal Medicaid regulators have signed off on a proposal by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper 's administration to offer scores of hospitals in the state a financial incentive to eliminate patients' medical debt and carry out policies that discourage future liabilities.
Cooper’s office said Monday that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services late last week approved the plan submitted by the state Department of Health and Human Services.
Cooper and health department leaders have described the plan as a first-of-its-kind proposal in the country to give hospitals a new financial carrot to cancel debt they hold on low- and middle-income patients and to help residents avoid it. The effort also received praise Monday from Vice President Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic presidential nominee.

Olympic surfing is being hosted in the small island nation of Tahiti. Paris officials say the decision to hold surfing there aligns with their goal of spreading the games across France.
Tahiti is the largest nation in French Polynesia and one of France's most well-known territories. The village where surfing is being held has been a world-renowned venue for surfers for decades.
