The Northern Territory’s peak body for housing advocacy, Aboriginal Housing NT has spoken out strongly against the NT Government’s public housing reforms, calling them out for disproportionately impacting Aboriginal tenants. Big Brekky’s Shauna spoke with CEO Leeanne Caton to find out more.

NT Housing Minister and local member for the Barkly, Steve Edginton, last week announced plans for extensive public housing reforms that would strengthen the government’s ability to recoup rental arrears while also simplifying the process to evict tenants. 

In the days since the announcement, human rights groups, accessible housing advocates and Aboriginal representative bodies including the Central Land Council, have decried the move, claiming it disproportionately, impacts Aboriginal tenants and stands to increase homelessness and crime. 

Chair of the Central Land Council, Mr Warren Williams, joins us on the Big Brekky Program to unpack the Government’s announcements and discuss the many concerns they have over it.

Justin Tuffy, a founding member of the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) spoke with the Big Brekky team, following the announcement from the NT Chief Minister Lia Finnochiaro that there are no penalties handed down to US-based company Crowley for the leak at the bulk fuel storage facility in Darwin Harbour. It was revealed that it also been been built without first securing a building permit.
