989: Gary Vaynerchuk - From Vegas to Armenia, A Chat With Gary Vee

Listen Later

After spending two years of working in a corporate IT department 9-5 and then working on my side hustle and recording podcasts 7-midnight, I finally decided to go it alone.

In May this year, I went from listening to Gary Vaynerchuk on the commute to an office with no windows to traveling 5,000 miles to Las Vegas to thank the man who inspired me to follow my dream in person. I even got to record a podcast with him at the Magento Imagine event with more than a little help from DRock.

Looking back, this was the moment when my journey came full circle. I thanked Gary, and we went our separate ways. But the universe was not finished with us just yet. Last week I found myself at the WCIT event in Armenia with Kim Kardashian, Alexis Ohanian, Serj Tankian from System of a Down, and Gary Vaynerchuk.

Once again, I found myself in a room with Gary Vee with a chance to hear his thoughts on the latest digital and tech trends. Gary shared why businesses need to pay attention to the explosive growth in audio content and why he believes that Joe Rogan is going to eventually sign a $100 million-plus deal to go exclusive on a platform because of the level of attention he has."

We are living in a world where our newsfeeds and social media timelines are attempting to demonize technology and deliver a vision of a dystopian future where machines rule the world. Thankfully, Gary Vaynerchuk has a much more positive outlook and advises everyone to get into accountability and stop demonizing technology.

"If you're a 28-year-old truck driver, and you know that autonomous vehicles will be arriving in 20 years when you will be 48 years old. Is it an autonomous truck's fault? Or is it your fault for not creating a new skill and getting a new job?"

We discuss how we have been here before and can learn how technology has transformed our lives and business throughout history. "People used to not have traffic lights, and somebody used to get paid to help you get through intersections."

"Does everybody cry when they get to the airport, and they go through a machine now, not somebody who checks your passport? No, they're happy because they don't want to wait 15 minutes." Gary went on to say that if you only care when your own job is in jeopardy, it makes you a hypocrite.
