In Episode 165 of the "My DPC Story Podcast," Dr. Maryal Concepcion hosts Dr. Angela Bymaster, a family medicine physician at Healing Grove Health Center. Growing up in Oregon, Dr. Bymaster was initially reluctant to pursue medicine due to its all-consuming nature but later embraced it for the flexibility it offered for her family. Inspired by the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, Dr. Bymaster and her husband launched their own faith-based Christian non-profit based DPC clinic in 2019, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing community needs during the crisis, their clinic provided essential services like COVID tests and food banks, funded by local churches and the city. Despite challenges, including a higher positivity rate and super-spreaders, the clinic conducted successful COVID-19 initiatives and became a trial site for PCR testing.
Dr. Bymaster is passionate about serving low-income communities, contrary to misconceptions that DPC only serves the wealthy. Her clinic integrates high- and low-income patients, fostering community engagement. As the pandemic subsides, Dr. Bymaster is excited to return to providing comprehensive primary care. This episode highlights the transformative potential of the DPC model and community-driven healthcare solutions. For more insights, visit dpcnews.com.
