After a frustrating 2-5 start to the 2022 season led by transfer quarterback Emory Jones, head coach Shaun Aguano and the Arizona State Sun Devils football program decided to move on to Trenton Bourguet as the team's starting quarterback and see what the fourth-year man could do as a starter for the first time in his college career. Bourguet did not disappoint, as he led the Sun Devils to a 42-34 victory over the Colorado Buffalos football team behind his 435 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Bourguet orchestrated an offense that felt much more confident in itself and more adept passing than it has at any other point this season. Bourguet had initially stepped in for an injured Jones against the then-ranked #21 Washington Huskies and tossed three touchdowns in a 45-38 upset win for the Sun Devils. The performance created a quarterback controversy for Arizona State Sun Devils football, but it ultimately led to this game and a great performance from the Tucson, Arizona native.
