A Thought for the Week

Drawing on the notion that the Ten Days of Repentance were created even before the world
came into being, the poet urges us to take advantage of this special time when our prayers for
forgiveness are more readily accepted.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ
אִמַּנְתָּ מֵאָז אֲרֶשֶׁת נִיב שְֹפָתַיִם. בִּתְפִלָּה ובְתַחֲנוּן דְּפֹק שַׁעֲרֵי־דְלָתָיִם. גִּשְׁתֵּנוּ עָדֶיךָ בִּזְרִיזוּת וְלֹא־בַעֲצַלְתַּיִם. דְּחוֹת
רֹעַ־פּוּרְעָנֻיּוֹת הַמִּתְרַגְּשׁוֹת לְעִתּוֹתָיִם:
הִנְנוּ אָתָאנוּ לְךָ בְּשִׁבְרוֹן רוּחַ וְדִכְּאוּת לֵב. וַדּוֹת לְפָנֶיךָ כָּל־פִּתּוּל וְעִקְשׁוּת־לֵב. זֶה חוֹקֵר לְבָבוֹת, הָרוֹפֵא לִשְׁבוּרֵי־לֵב. חַדֵּשׁ
רוּחַ נָכוֹן בְּקִרְבֵּנוּ, וּבְרָא־לָנוּ טְהוֹר־לֵב:
טִכַּסְתָּ מִקֶּדֶם אֵלּוּ יָמִים עֲשָֹרָה. יָחִיד בָּם לָשׁוּב וְלִמְצֹא כַפָּרָה. כָּל־הַשָּׁנָה כֻּלָּהּ לָרַבִּים מְסוּרָה. לְשַׁוֵּעַ וְלַעֲנוֹת בְּכָל־עֵת צוּקָה
וְצָרָה:
מִהֵר הַיָּחִיד וְשָׁב בֵּנְתַּיִם, מוֹחְלִין־לוֹ. נוֹאָשׁ וְלֹא־שָׁב, אֵין תַּקָּנָה לְעִוּוּלוֹ. סִדֵּר וְעָרַךְ כָּל־אֵילֵי־נְבָיוֹת לְהוֹעִילוֹ. עוֹתֵר וְצוֹעֵק
וְאֵין־שׁוֹמֵעַ־לוֹ:
פְּגִיעַת־הָרַבִּים וְהַיָּחִיד לְךָ־לְבַד עוֹלָה. צוּר, כִּי אַתָּה שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה. קַבְּלֵנוּ בְרָצוֹן וְהַמְצִיאֵנוּ מְחִילָה. רְצֵנוּ כְקָרְבַּן כָּלִיל
וְעוֹלָה:
שָׁפוֹט תִּשְׁפֹּט אוֹתָנוּ בְּרַחֲמִים וְחֶמְלָה. בָּנֶיךָ יְחוּסֶיךָ לְקוּחִים־לְךָ לִסְגֻלָּה. יֹקֶשׁ־מֶרְיָם יוּצְלַל בִּמְצוּלָה. נֶצַח לְהַלֶּלְךָ בְּכָל־מִינֵי

In this selicha for the eve of Rosh Hashanah we confront the inevitability of death, yet through prayer and tzedakah, we can be amongst the righteous who even in death live on.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ
אָדָם אֵיךְ יִזְכֶּה. בְּכָל יוֹם לַמָּוֶת מְחַכֶּה: בָּשָֹר מַה יְדַבֵּר. וְהוּא מוּבָל לַקֶּבֶר:
גֶּוְיוֹ לַבּוֹר נוֹפֵל. לִמְקוֹם חֹשֶׁךְ וְאֹפֶל: דִּמְיוֹנוֹ לַהֶבֶל דָּמָה. וְגַם נִמְשַׁל כַּבְּהֵמָה נִדְמָה:
הֲלֹא כָל יָמָיו מְעַט וְרָעִים. וְכָל מַעֲשָֹיו עֲוֹנוֹת וּפְשָׁעִים: וּבִלְבָבוֹ יָבִין וָשָׁב. וְרָפָא לוֹ לְקוֹלוֹ כְּיֻקְשַׁב:
זְכוּת וּמִישׁוֹר אִם יַעֲשֶֹה. בָּהֶם יִמְצָא מָנוֹס וּמַחֲסֶה: חַיָּיו כְּאַיִן חָשׁוּב. וְסוֹפוֹ לֶעָפָר יָשׁוּב:
טוֹב לוֹ שֶׁלֹּא נִבְרָא. מִשֶּׁנִּבְרָא לְיוֹם צָרָה וְעֶבְרָה: יָמָיו כָּלִים בְּעֹנִי וְעֶלְבּוֹן. וְאַחֲרִיתוֹ לִתֵּן דִּין וְחֶשְׁבּוֹן:
כְּעֶבֶד יִשְׁאַף צֵל. וּמִיַּד שְׁאוֹל לֹא יִנָּצֵל: לָמָּה מֵרֶחֶם יָצָא. וְהוּא שָׁמוּר לְרִיב וּמַצָּה:
מַה יּוֹעִילֶנּוּ רֹב הוֹנוֹ. וּלְיוֹם עֶבְרָה מַכְהֶה עֵינוֹ: נִשְׁמָתוֹ מֶנּוּ תֻפְרַד. בִּשְׁעַת מִיתָתוֹ לִמְאֹד יֶחֱרַד:
סוּפָה וּסְעָרָה יְבַעֲתוּהוּ. חֶבְלֵי מָוֶת יְסוֹבְבוּהוּ: עָרוּם יָצָא מִבֶּטֶן אִמּוֹ. וְעָרוּם יָשׁוּב לְבֵית עוֹלָמוֹ:
פִּתְאֹם יִלָּכֵד בִּמְצוּדָה רָעָה. וְאֵין מִי אוֹתוֹ לְפָדְעָה: צָרָה וְצַלְמָוֶת יִירָשׁ. מִבֵּיתוֹ וּמֵהוֹנוֹ יֻפְרָשׁ:
קָרַב קִצּוֹ וְנֶהְפַּךְ שִֹבְרוֹ. כָּבָה נֵרוֹ וְאָבַד זִכְרוֹ: רִמָּה תּוֹרִישֶׁנּוּ. תּוֹלֵעָה תִּשְׁלְטֶנּוּ:
שׁוֹמֵעַ זֹאת יִבְכֶּה וְיִדְאַג. בִּבְכִי וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים. כְּלָבִיא יִשְׁאַג. תְּפִלָּה וּצְדָקָה יַרְבֶּה. אוּלַי מִיִּסּוּרִין יֵחָבֵא:

In today’s selicha, we place our unconditional trust in G-d’s salvation in the face of ongoing
persecution.

יִשְֹרָאֵל נוֹשַׁע בַּיהֹוָה, תְּשׁוּעַת עוֹלָמִים. גַּם־הַיּוֹם יִוָּשְׁעוּ מִפִּיךָ, שׁוֹכֵן מְרוֹמִים. כִּי אַתָּה רַב־סְלִיחוֹת וּבַעַל הָרַחֲמִים:

יִוָּשְׁעוּ לְעֵין כֹּל וְאַל־יִמְשְׁלוּ בָם רְשָׁעִים. כַּלֵּה שֵׂעִיר וְחוֹתְנוֹ, וְיַעֲלוּ לְצִיּוֹן מוֹשִׁיעִים. כִּי אַתָּה רַב־סְלִיחוֹת וּבַעַל הָרַחֲמִים:
הַקְשִׁיבָה אָדוֹן לְקוֹל־שַׁוְעָתָם. וְלִמְכוֹן שִׁבְתְּךָ הַשָּׁמַיִם תַּעֲלֶה תְפִלָּתָם. כִּי אַתָּה רַב־סְלִיחוֹת וּבַעַל הָרַחֲמִים:

מֵרֹב פְּקוּדוֹת וּבֶהָלָה מְחַלְחֶלֶת. נָקְטָה נַפְשִׁי, לֶעָפָר בּוֹחֶלֶת. סָמְכָה בֶּטֶן לָאָרֶץ נִשְׁחֶלֶת. עוּרָה לָמָה תִישָׁן תּוֹחֶלֶת:
