Liberal leadership hopefuls Angus Taylor and Andrew Hastie have failed to agree on who will run for the party's top job, following a meeting in Melbourne.

While the Liberal party expects Opposition leader Sussan Ley could face a spill as early as next week, it's agreed that only one of the two hopefuls from the party's right will be allowed to run.

The meeting took place ahead of a memorial for former Liberal MP Katie Allen, who died in December last year.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says it's "extraordinary" that the talks took place ahead of the memorial.
