Robben Island is located in Table Bay off the cost of Cape Town in South Africa.
It's a flat island that's mostly oval in shape and in danger of being overtaken by the sea due to erosion in the ancient past.
UNESCO has named it a World Heritage Site, and it has also been denominated a South African National Heritage Site.
Robben Island has long imperiled ships and their crews because of the reefs which enclose it.
Often the Atlantic Ocean washes heavily onto the island, sending ships into the offshore reefs, but before they can founder, the heavy surf briskly rips them to pieces without allowing the crew to escape.
The island was once used as a prison, but today it is a popular place for tourists.
Guides lead tours of the prison and island.
The South African government owns all of the island except the church that's located there.
In addition to the Robben Island Museum, there are many tourist attractions, like the Robben Island Lighthouse.
It sits atop Minto Hill, which was once called Fire Hill.
It's the island's highest point, and it served as a beacon for ships to warn them about the rocky reef encircling the island.
Robben Island is also home to a sacred Muslim pilgrimage site known as the Moturu Kramat.
Moturu was one of the first imams in Cape Town, and he was banished to Robben Island and died there during the Eighteenth Century.
Many tourists also travel to Robben Island to see the African penguins up close as they are bred and reared there.
