Crocodiles are one of the most ubiquitous sights in South Africa, and believe it or not, one of the most popular activities there is kayaking with them.
Kayaking in a body of water that's teeming with menacing predators like crocodiles is singularly dangerous, as is demonstrated by the countless stories of kayakers being attacked and killed by them.
However, in spite of the precariousness of the activity, thrill-seekers looking for their next derring-do still line up to do it.
Guides who routinely take kayakers out to paddle among the crocodiles warn them that one of the most dangerous parts of the trip is the launch of the kayaks.
Crocodiles often assail kayakers when they're in shallow water because they know people—a source of food for them—are there frequently.
They tell kayakers not to put a single toe in the water there because of the peril.
One of the most popular places in South Africa for kayakers to go out among the crocodiles is the St.Lucia estuary.
It's only about three feet deep, but the water is very tenebrous there, making an already disconcerting experience even more so because it's difficult to see the crocodiles the kayakers know are there.
St.Lucia is a small settlement in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province and serves mostly as a base for the Greater St.Lucia Wetlands Park.
About 1,200 Nile crocodiles live in the wetlands area.
The Nile crocodile is the second biggest extant reptile and an extremely aggressive type of crocodile, which makes kayaking with more than a thousand of them a huge adrenaline rush because of the danger.
