The Cry of Winnie Mandela is 'n roman wat Winnie Mandela se lewensverhaal vertel.

The Cry of Winnie Mandela is a novel that tells Winnie Mandela's life story.
Njabulo S. Ndebele wrote the highly acclaimed novel, which was published in 2003.
The book is concentrated on four "ordinary" and "unremarkable" women who all spent time waiting for the return of their men.
The private stories of their comparably mundane lives are measured up to the stories of Winnie Mandela, the wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela, and Penelope, the wife of Odysseus from ancient Greek mythology.
Penelope's wait and yearning for Odysseus lasted eighteen years, while Winnie's wait dragged on for twenty-seven years.
The women in the book consider why they waited for their men and what their fruitless waiting did to them.
The result is some haunting virtual dialogues among the four women and Penelope and Winnie.
The nature of these women's waiting is quite different, as one husband essentially disowned her by going to work at a mine and settling down there to start a new family, while another traveled abroad to study medicine.
The third went from being active politically to disappearing while in exile and then imprisoned on Robben Island.
All four men ended up going their own ways, being loath to return to where they were before and discarding their women.
The first half of the novel tells their stories, while the second one gives voice to their suffering and thoughts as the women address Winnie and Penelope.
Winnie is also given a voice as well, responding to the women and their thoughts and stories.
