Bitter Fruit is a book that was written by Achmat Dangor and published in 2001.
The story is set in 1998 and revolves around a black family's disintegration following the denouement of apartheid.
The main character is Silas Ali, a lawyer based in Johannesburg who is closing in on the age of fifty.
He rose to prominence while Nelson Mandela was president, becoming a liaison officer who coordinates the activities of the government with the moves of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
One morning while at a shopping mall, Silas identifies the man who raped his wife Lydia twenty years before while he had to listen to her screams from inside a police van.
The brutal act was concomitant with Silas' participation in the activities of the African National Congress' militant wing.
The couple never told anyone about the atrocity and never even spoke to each other about it.
Lydia long suspected that her rapist was her son's biological father but never apprised anyone of her suspicions, although she wrote in her diary about it.
Because of the crime, their sexless marriage began to fail over the years.
Also their son Michael drifts away, and the couple doesn't know where he is or how he spends his time.
They learn too late that he often seduces older women and has an affair with a man his father knew while working with the militant wing of the African National Congress.
He also delves into the history of his father's family, who was Muslim, although his father was not as he was an illegitimate child.
Eventually Michael goes on a shooting spree.
One of the men he kills was the man who raped his mother, as he had read her diary at one point.
