----Formal English----
Desmond Tutu is a civil rights activist who became Cape Town's first black archbishop.
He was also the Anglican Church of Southern Africa's bishop.
It was called the Church of the Province of Southern Africa at the time he was bishop.
Tutu rose to prominence during the crusade to extirpate apartheid.
Following the 1976 Soweto Riots, which were protests against the compulsory use of Afrikaans as the instruction language in black schools, he began to support an economic boycott of South Africa.
Although the riots were originally focused on the use of Afrikaans in black schools, they were fundamentally a revolt against apartheid.
The sanctions Tutu supported were set forth by the UN General Assembly as a way to internationally protest the racist regime of South Africa.
He also supported peaceful protest against the government and led marches through the streets of Cape Town in which tens of thousands of people participated.
He spoke candidly of his thoughts on the government, unequivocally comparing apartheid to Nazi Germany, using his position as bishop to get agreements from almost all of the churches to continue his crusade against apartheid through lectures and writings.
He sought reconciliation between both sides of the struggle and worked as a mediator to keep both sides from a full-blown war against each other.
Following apartheid's demise, Tutu led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
He retired as archbishop but received the rare honorary title of Emeritus Archbishop.
He continues to fight for civil rights, campaigning against HIV and AIDS, racism, poverty, sexism, homophobia, and other causes.
