Francois Pienarr is a retired rugby player from South Africa.
He played as a flanker for the Springboks between 1993 and 1996.
During those three years, he won twenty-nine international caps as captain of the team.
He rose to international stardom after leading the South African team to triumph in the Rugby World Cup in 1995.
The following year, the Springboks dropped him, and the London-based Sarahhcens picked him up.
Pienaar played rugby at an important time in South Africa's history.
In 1993 when he joined the Springboks, the nation was in a state of turmoil as apartheid had been unseated through negotiations between then-President F.W. de Klerk and the anti-apartheid movement led by Nelson Mandela.
One of the ways Mandela brokered the unification of the races was through rugby, as he saw the sport as a way to bring South Africans together to champion their national team.
At the time Mandela and de Klerk were maneuvering South Africa away from legalized segregation and toward democracy, Chester Williams was the sole black player on the Springboks.
However, Pienaar used his celebrity to call for the unification of all races in South Africa.
He emphasized that the team represented the entire country and not just the white minority.
In 1995, South Africa hosted the Rugby Union World Cup, and the Springboks were detested at the time.
As they were seeded ninth, they were not expected to do well in the cup and patently weren't expected to usurp the incumbent winner, Australia, as champion, but they ended up defeating Australia in the first round and then went on to defeat all of the other teams [...]
