Grense; Die Epos van Suid-Afrika se Skepping en die Tragedie van die Xhosa Mense (The Epic of South Africa's Creation and the Tragedy of the Xhosa People) is 'n geskiedenisboek wat geskryf is deur Noel Mostert.

Frontiers; The Epic of South Africa's Creation and the Tragedy of the Xhosa People is a history book written by Noel Mostert.
The author intended it for the general public rather than academicians, and as such, it's meant to engross the average reader.
Mostert was commended for his book because he wrote fluently in everyday language and even though he didn't target scholars with the book, he didn't skimp on the research and was very thorough in the details.
The author was born in South Africa but left at the age of seventeen and spent four decades out of the country as a journalist.
He returned to the land of his birth to do research for Frontiers, but he didn't stay to reside there permanently.
This chronicle of the Xhosa tribe is highly sympathetic with their plight and appears to idealize their lifestyle.
Mostert portrays missionaries as the vanguard of European colonialism.
As settlers advanced into the African continent, the Xhosas began to gradually lose their land.
They were utterly defeated by 1856, having lost a large part of their ancestral lands, and they suffered further decimation of their cattle due to a bovine lung disease which had come from Europe.
Later a prophetess under the influence of her uncle, who had been influenced by Christianity convinced the Xhosas that in order to be saved, they must sacrifice more, requiring the deaths of all their cattle and the destruction of their grain stores.
A famine ensued after, wiping out tens of thousands of lives and shattering Xhosa society.
European settlers then hunted down all of the Xhosa leaders and deported them t [...]
