A Dry White Season is a novel that was written by Andre Brink and later transformed into a film of the same name.
All of Brink's novels are indictments of the apartheid regime in South Africa, and A Dry White Season is considered by some to be the most deprecatory of all of them.
The main character is a white teacher named Ben Du Tolt who lives in Johannesburg.
He is the paradigmatic family man from the suburbs with three kids and a wife.
He lives a complacent life, incognizant of the South African government's racially motivated machinations.
Not long after the 1976 Soweto Riots, a black custodian at his school named Gordon seeks his help in locating his son Jonathan, who disappeared after last being seen with the dissidents in Soweto.
Together, they consult a lawyer and begin entreating the police for information on the young man's whereabouts.
The police are evasive and give conflicting reports of what happened to Jonathan but eventually claim that he died on the day of the riots and was buried a month later when no one claimed his body.
Ben is placated with the story, but Gordon keeps digging and ends up in jail himself and then is killed.
Gordon's wife goes back to Ben and convinces him to help, and Ben's life is turned upside-down as he tries to find out what really happened to Gordon and Jonathan.
He receives a bomb in the mail, is shot at while driving, and is blackmailed and forced to resign from his job.
Eventually everyone turns against him, even his family and friends.
