Go cry to Miami. Designer Abigail Stewart launched her line in one of the most tumultuous periods for the garment industry in recent memory, yet keeps making it work season after season with brilliant collections. Our conversation here goes deep into what worked and what didn’t during her emergence in the marketplace, and touches highly relevant points on the perpetual struggle all designers face between the demands of business and artistry. Also, the zipper is a lie, and Betty White is so hot right now.

Future sources abound. This episode features a recording from a panel discussion on textile sourcing from the TexWorld trade show, “TOOLS FOR TRANSPARENCY IN THE GLOBAL FASHION SUPPLY CHAIN,” with panelists Benita Singh, Co-Founder & CEO, Source4Style; Leonardo Bonanni, PhD, CEO, Founder, Sourcemap Inc.; and Pranay Srinivasan, Founder/CEO, Sourceasy. The moderator is Bob Bland, CEO and Founder of Manufacture New York.
* There are some sound quality issues at several points due to feedback from speakers mounted in the ceiling directly over the panelists’ microphones. We have done our best to filter out the feedback noise, but were dependent on the venue’s audio system for the live source recording, and some artifacts remain, unfortunately.

The CFDA just swallowed Fashion Calendar, so let’s talk about that. The gang provides analysis of the CFDA’s most recent acquisition, Seth talks about his recent week of textile and menswear trade show experiences as well as a factory visit, and the questions “is fashion an evolved industry?” and “why is there no New York version of the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week?” get some scrutiny.

Our TexWorld excursion. We trekked over to the Javitz Center for the TexWorld trade show this week. The TexWorld folks were nice enough to give Manufacture New York a booth to show what we’re doing about bringing garment manufacturing back to The United States, and they let American Fashion Podcast borrow a conference room to record this episode on-site at the show. While there, we interviewed designers Alexandra Lin and Fran Knight who were visiting from Florida, as well as retailer/designer Woody Pierce of The Gentleman Place in Brooklyn, and Andrew Levy from the fashion tech start-up Ovio.
