An Irishman Abroad

Sonia O'Sullivan dials in from Spain as she helps her daughter Sophie prepare for the World Athletics Championships. The clock is ticking. What can an athlete pro or amateur hope to cram in before their big exam. Is it more about the head game at this point or can we plan a great final ten days before our big races? Sonia looks back on her 1995 gold at the worlds and helps Jarlath with his understanding of training paces. Later in the show top physical therapist and coach Vinny Mulvey joins the show to fill us in on his week in the Alps with the On Running Team. Marion McKeone chats to Jarlath about the latest legal troubles facing Donald Trump. What does this new indictment mean if anything, why is it all happening at once and how long will it take to see any sort of result from these cases. In second half of the show available on our members page (www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad) you can hear Marion take on what will become of Hunter Biden. Is Joe Biden's troublesome son a reason not to vote in the next election or just a nice piece of juicy click bait? Marion also looks at the United States Embassy in Dublin issuing a security alert for American travellers following a horrific attack on a U.S. visitor and the kidnapping of a US nurse and her child in Haiti.

The GOAT herself joined our listeners in person this week for a run in Phoenix Park. I captured some sounds and asked Sonia why the "run slow to run fast" mantra might not apply to her. We look forward to the World Championships in Budapest and back at an incredible summer of running for Irish athletes including Sophie O'Sullivan.

Nobody does a financial scandal quite like the USA. In our final episode before our summer break Marion McKeone compares and contrasts the current RTE payments scandal to similar situations in America. She takes a look ahead to what lies in store for us during the primaries and Donald's latest trial. Could it all be done and dusted by Christmas?

The spirit of Parkrun is not centred around beating your fastest time but if there’s a wall there, you may as well try and jump over it some time. You can sit on it, arrange to meet friends at the wall, chew the fat and have fun but occasionally it’s ok to jump it. With the help of the Queen of Irish athletics you can instantly take minutes off your time. You’re not going to believe how glaringly obvious and ingenious her tips are. Profound wisdom that is hard won from her years training and winning all around the world. Later in the show elite physical therapist and coach Vinny Mulvey joins me to discuss the best way to prepare your week to run fast on a Saturday morning and how to make a Rocky trilogy in a month of Parkruns. You’ll be standing with both fists in the air at the end of this episode.

Will The Rock be a future candidate for President of The United States? Will Trump be convicted and go to jail over the missing files? And who killed Tupac? On this week’s podcast, Marion tackles America’s most un-answerable questions, from politics to celebrities to celebrities entering politics and back again.

Who will be the next celebrity to take American politics by storm? Marion parses out who could be the next Trump. With former comedian Zelensky running the show in war torn Ukraine and America’s history with celebrity presidents, Marion discusses future stars turned global politicians.

What does a competent Government mean for public opinion in the States? Marion discusses how a capable Government is equated with dullness as Biden has led a stable term in the Oval Office. In the aftermath of Trump’s disastrous tenure, Marion feels Biden’s stable government is not viewed as it probably deserves.

After Trump’s indictment will we see prison time for the former President? Marion gives a couple of the most jaw dropping theories doing the rounds on what could happen if he is convicted, including the possibility of a pardon by the current Democratic president!

What issues should Americans be up in arms about? Should Americans seek to abolish the Electoral College and the Senate? Marion breaks down which states are shafted in representation by the current electoral system.

Why do American’s have such low sympathy for Biden’s embattled son Hunter?

—- Over on Patreon — in the XL edition of the show you can hear:

Is there ever a possibility of assault rifles being taken off the streets in America. Marion brings new hope as California’s Governor Gavin Newsom works to pass a new amendment that could alter the iconic second amendment. What do the Democratic Governor’s ideas involve and could they come to fruition?

What is the state of abortion law after the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe V Wade? Marion discusses the patchwork quilt of injustice that has taken over the US as women are suffering in restrictive states.  However, even conservative states are fighting back with Kansas holding a referendum on abortion rights that could bring hope in other places in the future.

Are American’s worried about AI? More importantly, should they be? Marion and Jarlath chat about AI use in America and what it means for workers across multiple sectors as it has the potential to affect the job security of many, from truck drivers to screen writers. Marion also looks at how it could affect disinformation campaigns in the upcoming election.

Finally, they address the all important mystery of who shot Tupac Shakur on the Vegas strip in 1996? Marion presents an interesting theory as Jarlath discusses the idea of reparations for slavery in America.

Marion McKeone of the Sunday Business Post heads to Miami to experience all the madness of Donald Trump’s second indictment. The circus is back in town just when it looked like the show was over. Are there some delinquent children that are so disruptive we are better off removing and ignoring them than pursuing each and every crime and misdemeanour they might be guilty of? Is letting Trump back in the door too high a price for justice?
