Peter Sutcliffe terrorised the communities around West Yorkshire from 1975 until his capture in 1981. He is confirmed to have murdered 13 women, but he also attempted to murder many more. It is those confirmed survivors that we look at today.

From 1975-1980, Yorkshire was terrorised by 13 brutal murders and several attempted murders, that we know of.

The rampant misogyny of the police and broader public attitudes left a number of victims and victim’s families further traumatised and led to one of the notoriously botched investigations in West Yorkshire.

Peter Sutcliffe was caught in early 1981, not through the police investigation into the murders, but through the instincts of a single officer.

Claudia Lawrence, a 35 year old chef from the University of York, disappeared in March 2009. She was last seen and heard from on 18th March 2009. Despite being one of the most high profile & long running missing persons in recent British history, no body has ever been found, and no one has been charged with an offence in relation to her disappearance.

The police suspect she was murdered and the case is being treated as such by North Yorkshire police. But someone knows what happened to Claudia Lawrence, if you have any information to help the police please get in touch with them.

On Sunday 18th July 2004, the murdered bodies of twins, Claire and Diane Sanderson, were found in Claire’s flat.

Later that morning, bodies of an elderly couple, James and Joan Britton, were found over 25 miles away.

Despite seeming unrelated, forensic evidence later linked the two double murders and one of Britain’s largest manhunts for the killer, Mark Hobson, began, lasting over 8 days, before he was finally spotted by a member of the public and arrested.

This episode marks 30 years since the Dunblane Massacre, when 16 children and their teacher were killed at Dunblane Primary School on 13 March 1996. The attack, carried out with legally owned handguns, devastated the town of Dunblane and shocked the nation.

In the aftermath, grieving families led the Snowdrop Campaign, which helped bring about sweeping changes to UK gun laws in 1997, effectively banning private handgun ownership.

This episode reflects on the victims, the community’s resilience, and how collective action transformed unimaginable loss into lasting legislative change.
