Apocalypse Video episodes

  • The Last Blockbuster / At The Video Store
They say when you’ve hit one hundred episodes on television that you’ve officially made it - you’re big time. Time to see that syndication money pour in and start living the rest of your life on easy street. While I’m not sure that the same thing applies for podcasting, I can say this: HELL YEAH! 100 EPISODES, BABY! WOO-HOOOOO!!!

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we do a self congratulatory victory lap are fellow cinephiles and Apocalypse Video Babies, Mike and Ryan.

For our hundredth episode we figured what better way to celebrate this milestone than by talking about a couple of documentaries that deal with the thing that we love the most: Video Stores.

Listen as we discuss how At The Video Store is the punk rock equivalent to The Last Blockbuster; we reminisce about our days working at Hollywood Video and trying to explain the convoluted mess that was “Power Play”; and finally, controversy strikes when I compare Sandy Harding to Carole Baskin (minus the alleged murder…).

This is Dave from Sector 2 thanking everyone out there for listening. It’s been a pleasure bringing you the lost art of cinema these past 100 episodes. Here’s to 100 more! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to return some video tapes.

  • Malignant
It’s finally time, Kiddies! Halloween is here! And that can only mean one thing...the conclusion of the Apocalypse Video Shocktober Spooktacular! And believe us when we tell you - we saved the best for last!

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me for our final spook-em is our good friend (and previously presumed dead), Ryan, along with two very special guests: Eric and Becky, from the Monster-Twin Representation Society.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the ongoing debate on whether or not Malignant plays on our expectations of the genre or if it’s just plain a bad movie; we marvel as Gabriel shows off his Kung Fu moves on a helpless police force; and finally, we wonder what kind of father keeps the video recorder going when he’s taping his daughter speaking to her toy phone about killing her unborn sister.

I’m your host and resident creep, Dave, and joining me are fellow cinephiles and people who can hold their breath for a verrry long time, Mike and Jackie.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the bone chilling terror of Joe Hill: the creepiest child actor in cinema history; Stephen King does his best Bill Hader impression; and finally, Creepshow teaches us an all important truth - all rich people are assholes.

  • Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Move over, Pennywise...there are some new clowns in the neighborhood. And these clowns are from outer spaaaace! (Wait...was Pennywise from space too? Sorry, I never finished it. I couldn’t get past the kid orgy scene -- I guess it’s true what they say; “cocaine’s a helluva drug”.)

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we put up the big tent and try to avoid getting ensnared in cotton candy are fellow cinephiles and coulrophobes, Mike and Jackie.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the strangest passion project ever to include a fully functional popcorn-gun; the Chiodo Brothers cram every possible clown trope you could think of into their movie - including some you wish they hadn’t; and finally, we discover how low the IMDB will sink as they include “breasts growing” as a plot keyword.

Topics covered in this spooooky assignment include the 24th century’s acceptance of 100 year old granny’s getting down with thirty year old studs; Counselor Troi asserts her position as ship’s gossip hound; and finally, we all share in disgusted disbelief as Beverly Crusher spends the whole episode getting turned on by her Nana’s erotic journals.

  • Cat People (1942)
Have you ever been jealous of a lover’s friend? Ever walk into a pet shop and upset the animals with your presence? Have you ever torn up a couch with your razor sharp nails after getting dumped? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions...you might be a Cat People.

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we discuss the film that inspired a young Paul Schrader to direct an incest filled remake are fellow cinephiles and lycanthropes Mike, Jackie, and Special Guests Cody and Pawnna.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the unbearable blue balls that come with being wed to a Cat Person; we learn that psychiatry of the 1940’s involves shining a spotlight into a patient’s eyes and forcibly kissing them; and finally, we find out that all you need to do to meet your future wife is be able to nail three pointers into a city zoo trashcan.

Tis the season...for HORROR! Welcome to the first annual Apocalypse Video Shocktober Spooktacular! I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we grab a pint and try to avoid the rain are fellow ghouls and cinephiles Mike and Jackie.

Our first terrifying entry for Shocktober is none other than the 2012 Irish horror-comedy, Grabbers. “When things stop getting polite...and start getting...GRABBED!”

Topics of discussion in this episode include the fine line between good drunk acting and bad drunk acting; we rate our favorite kills, which include the infamous “death by flinging”; and finally, we decide the “Netflix and Chill-ability” of Grabbers and what constitutes good “chilling” material.

  • Star Trek: The Next Generation - Rascals
    Captain’s Log, Stardate 46235.7

After watching one of the best cerebral installments of The Next Generation in “Darmok”, the crew of the Apocalypse Video Trek-Cast return to the sillier side of Trek with Season Six’s “Rascals” - an episode that has more in common with a Saturday morning cartoon than with heady sci-fi. Nevertheless, the crew is looking forward to the zany antics of our newly de-aged heroes, as well as our first encounter with the D-Grade villains of Star Trek: the butt-headed Ferengi.

Topics covered in this assignment include the awkwardness of a forty year old man grappling with the idea of his wife now being a twelve year old; Guinan teaches us the simple joy of jumping on a bed; and finally, Captain Picard must make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save his ship and crew: throw a hissy fit.

  • Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
It’s everyone’s favorite time of the year again; Employee Reviews! And since Ryan is missing and presumed dead, there’s only one other employee in the store whose performance is up for review, good old Mike himself. But this time there’s a twist! Instead of simply getting a two and a half cent pay increase, Mike will be up for the coveted role of Store Retainer.

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we watch a training film that will help MIke in the ways of the Retainer are fellow cinephiles and made men Mike and Jackie.

Listen as we discuss Ghost Dog’s dorky, yet simultaneously cool, gun sheathing move; we learn that mobsters are big cartoon fans; and finally, we decide which film from the banner year of 1999 that we would model our lives after (Spoiler: The answer is NOT Fight Club...thank God).

  • Star Trek: The Next Generation - Darmok
Captain’s Log, Stardate 45047.2. With Q’s “Adventures of Robin Hood” fantasy behind us, we move on to Season 5’s “Darmok”, an episode that showcases, at least in this Captain’s opinion, the best qualities of Star Trek, which include diplomacy, understanding, and incomprehensible techno-babble.

I’m your host and Captain, Dave, and joining me are fellow Trek fans and linguistic experts, Mike and Jackie.

Topics covered in this assignment include the prospect of our language evolving (or de-evolving) into a series of gifs and memes; we laugh in disbelief at the Predator-esque Beast of El-Adrel; and finally, we ponder if there will ever be a world where well shot action and high minded ideals can actually coexist in Star Trek.
