Around The 412

Smitty and Tyler talk all things Pittsburgh Pirates. Paul Skenes and Bryan Reynolds have been named 2024 NL All-Stars. This comes just 2 months after Skenes made his MLB debut. As he continues to take the league by storm and garner more and more national attention, we ponder if it's possible that he's already the best pitcher in baseball. If you had to pick one pitcher to start a Game 7 tomorrow, he's got to be on the short list, right? We discuss that and if Ben Cherington and co. will actually make a splash at this deadline to acquire a bat. Names like Taylor Ward and Jazz Chisholm have been mentioned, but will the Bucs pony up what it takes to get a deal done? Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler talk all things Pittsburgh Pirates. It's the same story week in and week out. The starting pitching (and bullpen as of late) continue to give the team opportunity after opportunity but they don't have the offense to capitalize on it. Bryan Reynolds continues to rake in June. Rowdy Tellez has turned his season around in June. Andrew McCutchen is exceeding expectations given his age and coming off a major injury. Beyond that? They haven't gotten many other consistent contributors. With the trade deadline looming and the team reportedly willing to move pitching to acquire MLB Bats, it's time to turn those words into actions before it's too late. Will they go big, small or do nothing at all? Time will tell, but which positions should the team be looking to upgrade?Use code 'AT412' for $10 off your order at Game Changers!

Smitty and Tyler talk all things Pittsburgh Penguins. It's a busy week in the NHL World. The NHL Draft is underway (at the time of recording this) and free agency is set to kick off. Kyle Dubas should be a busy man. Will we see the team move on from Reilly Smith and/or Tristan Jarry. Will he look to improve the forward group via trade or primarily through free agency? Who are some players to keep an eye on? How will he approach the NHL Draft without holding a first-round pick?

Smitty and Tyler are back to talk all things Pittsburgh Steelers. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver appeared on 'The Pivot' amid his frustrations with not yet receiving a contract extension from the team. He openly stated that if he isn't with the 49ers next year, he will probably be a Washington Commander or a Pittsburgh Steeler. Since then, he has met with the team and by all accounts, it was a positive meeting. Are we fully past the idea that was never likely, which was a Brandon Aiyuk trade or are you still holding out hope? If you could only have Justin Fields or Russell Wilson for two years, which one are you taking? Will Danny Smith get more creative with the rejuvenation of kickoffs and kick returns? Will Justin Fields be used like Taysom Hill? Let's discuss all of this and more!

Smitty and Tyler discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins gave goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic a two-year contract extension worth $2.5M per season. With him locked into being in the fold, will the team look to move on from Tristan Jarry or run it back with the same goalie tandem? Where do the Pens compare league wide in terms of how expensive their goalie room is? We also go through the roster and say whether or not we believe every player will be back. Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler are back to talk all things Pittsburgh Steelers. The New England Patriots gave RB Rhamondre Stevenson a nice new 4-year extension and we discuss how this could impact Najee Harris for better or worse. Does it make a deal between he and the Steelers more or less likely? It's hard to blame Omar Khan for moving on from Diontae Johnson. It's also hard to give him flak for not coughing up the necessary picks + money to acquire Brandon Aiyuk. However, a lot of the mess at the WR position was avoidable. How much of an expanded role will Pat Freiermuth have in the passing game? Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Pirates strength all season has been their starting pitching. That may come as a surprise based off expectations before the season, but here we are. Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and Bailey Falter continue to lead a playoff quality rotation. The problem? The bats haven't followed suit. Every game seems like a race to 3 runs to see who will come out on top. Bryan Reynolds, Rowdy Tellez and Andrew McCutchen have shouldered most of the load for the offense in the month of June as they hope for more contributions from the likes of Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jack Suwinski and more consistency from Oneil Cruz. Connor Joe and Nick Gonzales have even cooled off quite a bit as of late. The team needs to add at minimum one bat, and the sooner the better. Let's discuss all of this and more!

Smitty and Tyler discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have hired ex-Rangers and Sharks head coach David Quinn to fill the void after parting ways with Todd Reirden. Quinn has a long track record in the game and his connection with Mike Sullivan goes all the way back to Boston University playing days. Is this the right move for what the Penguins needed to add to the staff though? Are Kyle Dubas and FSG right to bring Quinn in with the hopes of getting Ryan Graves back on track and working with the rest of the defensive group? Will he have a role in helping the power play? Let's discuss!

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their 2024 mandatory minicamp on Thursday. Right before they got the week started though, Mike Tomlin was given a new three-year contract by the team. We dive into both sides of the coin. Why we agree with the move, why we can see the point of view of those that don't and everything in between. Was Art Rooney II right to provide this much security and a pay raise to Mike Tomlin at this juncture? Would they have been better off waiting to see how the 2024 season played out? Do all the moving pieces such as Arthur Smith, Russell Wilson, the offensive line, etc...make it all the more important to have stability at the head coaching spot? Let's discuss all of this and more!

Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and Bailey Falter continue to lead a playoff quality rotation. The problem? The bats and bullpen haven't followed suit. The team has seemingly had one or the other for the entirety of the season and never had all 3 elements working in unison. While Rowdy Tellez has seemingly made some mechanical changes leading to a strong June thus far and Bryan Reynolds remains consistent. Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jack Suwinski, Henry Davis, Michael A. Taylor, etc... are providing nothing. Beyond David Bednar and Colin Holderman, the bullpen leaves a lot to be desired too. With wild card berths very much in reach, now is the time for the Bucs to make a move. Let's discuss all of this and more!
