Around The 412

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their 2024 OTAs on Thursday. We talked about some takeaways from that as we prepare for mandatory minicamp next week, and then it's full steam ahead to training camp. Justin Fields mixed in with some starters, taking snaps from Nate Herbig and throwing to George Pickens. Is this even more of an indication that he and Russell Wilson will have a true QB battle in training camp? How do we feel about the team bringing CB Cam Sutton back into the fold? Is the quest to acquire another WR still on or can the likes of Calvin Austin III provide enough to prevent that from happening? Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to get great starting pitching from Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and Bailey Falter (despite the Dodgers getting to him a little bit). The bullpen, however, continues to cost the team games every single week. The argument could be made that Colin Holderman and David Bednar are the only two reliable arms out of the pen right now. While they couldn't have foreseen injuries to Ryan Borucki and Dauri Moreta, this is why you can never have enough arms. Henry Davis and Jack Suwinski have rejoined the club and hope some adjustments made in AAA lead to improved results up here. Nick Gonzales continues to look like a new player in 2024. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to go through their OTAs and we continue to hunt for storylines from them. The team has told offensive lineman James Daniels that there will be no extension talks with him ahead of the season, so he will play out the final year of his contract. Joey Porter Jr. claimed that he is CB1 in the entire league and we discuss how we feel about that statement from the sophomore DB. We then answer questions from the audience about a Justin Fields package, the WR position, year-two leaps and more. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to get great starting pitching from Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and even a pleasantly surprising Bailey Falter. The team has had its fair share of letdowns this season, but along with the starting pitching, is Nick Gonzales' offensive turnaround the most pleasant surprise? Since being recalled, he continues to rake, and the underlying numbers suggest it is no fluke. While the team needs more from the likes of Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, as well as hopeful bounce backs from Henry Davis and Jack Suwinski, Gonzales continues to carry the torch for an up and down offense. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have reported for OTAs and there have been a few things that stand out immediately. Patrick Queen wants his presence to be seen, heard and felt. Pat Freiermuth is in for a massive season. Joey Porter Jr. and George Pickens both look physically bigger. We discuss all of this and then take to X to answer questions about the slot corner position, trading either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields and much more. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to get great starting pitching from Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and even a pleasantly surprising Bailey Falter. As of late, the bats have even come to play with Bryan Reynolds staying hot, Andrew McCutchen finding a home at the top of the lineup and them providing enough run support to put them in position to win. However, the bullpen has been a disaster. Derek Shelton has no right buttons that he can push at this moment as we sit in year 5 of Ben Cherington's rebuild. What was supposed to be a strength of the club has become their Achilles. Can they right the ship? Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Steelers learned of their 2024-25 NFL schedule on Wednesday and now the fun begins. In a weird twist, they won't see a single divisional opponent until Week 11. Their bye sits at Week 9. They will play host to the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas. They start in Atlanta and their home opener is against the LA Chargers. It is definitely one of the stranger schedules we've seen in some time. We go over all of that and then spend some time talking about Cam Heyward and his contract status amidst the news he won't be at OTAs. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Pirates called up top pitching prospect Paul Skenes to make his MLB debut last Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. The electricity could be felt with each pitch, providing a playoff-like atmosphere. Despite not working deep into the game, the flashes were there to give anticipation towards seeing his next start. Now boasting a rotation of Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller, the Pirates have the starting pitching necessary to compete in the NL Central. However, do they have the bats? If not, is it possible to find them in short order? Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Steelers checked a lot of boxes during the 2024 NFL Draft, but certainly still have some work to do with their roster ahead of kickoff. Tyler gives his thoughts on the draft haul and where things stand. We then get into their search for another WR and what to make of the team not picking up the 5th year option on RB Najee Harris. Let's discuss all of this and more!

The Pittsburgh Penguins have moved on from assistant coach Todd Reirden following back-to-back disappointing seasons. A lot goes into these decisions, but the failing power play is what we think attributed to this more than anything else. Head coach Mike Sullivan was very vocal about his desire to retain his coaching staff, but the decision was still made by Kyle Dubas. This begs the question, now what? Is there more change to come? How will Sullivan respond, if Reirden really was his guy? Let's discuss all of this and more!
