Norman Lear: His Life & Times, the first comprehensive biography of the eponymous TV pioneer by show business historian, entertainment journalist and author Tripp Whetsell, will be released by Applause Books on November 11th. Hailed by Publisher's Weekly as a "fitting tribute to a consequential figure in television history," it is the first in-depth biography of the iconic writer, producer and social activist, who beginning in the early 1970s, forever altered America's television landscape with such groundbreaking situation comedies as All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. While much has been written about Lear, Whetsell demonstrates there is still a lot more to be learned about "the man in the white hat," who was arguably the first behind-the-scenes television figure to become a bona fide celebrity in his own right, whose multi-award-winning taboo-busting sitcoms averaged as many as 120 million viewers a week during their peak.Whetsell currently teaches the only college-level course about Lear and his classic sitcoms at their alma mater, Boston's Emerson College, in which Lear appeared as a guest via Zoom twice. He was also the only journalist to interview Lear exclusively for a 40th anniversary retrospective of All in the Family for TV Guide in 2001. From his birth in New Haven, Connecticut in July 1922 right up until his death in Los Angeles in December 2023 at the age of 101, Lear's life is told in thorough, meticulous detail with unflinching candor

I’m always asking questions.  The fun begins when you start researching for answers. Such as… When it comes to an injury what’s better to use ice or heat? Plus Why are so many people falling down these days? I’m Arroe…  I am a daily writer.  A silent wolf.  I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate.  I call it The Daily Mess.  A chronological walk through an everyday world.  Yes, it’s my morning writing.  As a receiver of thoughts and ideas, we as people tend to throw it to the side and deal with it later.  When a subject arrives, I dig in.  It’s still keeping a journal!  By doing the research the picture becomes clearer.  This is the Daily Mess…

The geography speaks for itself. The bad guys are just kilometers away, across the river. We are the only international (or locals) with a brick and mortar office downtown, for them to go for help. No assistance from govt unless elderly, and the assistance they get is shit. Office safe from “normal” shelling (tank fire, most mortars). Glide bombs and attack drones are new since Ukrainians landed on other side and have beachhead. Quietly, that is a total massacre over there — poorly kept secret here. can’t do much about the big stuff … if we get hit with a glide bomb we’re fucked. I like our chances. Monday Wednesday and Friday the FREE STORE AT THE FRONT is open at our office. Basic foods medicines hygiene and winter clothes. Mondays we run bread into insanely dangerous places by the Antonivky bridge, do other stuff like that. Off the radar. For city admin. We are an important “off the books asset” for them.

The world needs weirdos. You know who’s weird? Astronauts, scientists, innovators, geniuses, creatives. Throughout history, the best and brightest among us have been willing to stand out, push boundaries, and be perceived as weird. Nikola Tesla, Margaret Wise Brown, Jim Henson, Katherine Johnson. Original ideas are weird. And then they are replicated. And that’s exactly what happens in this story. Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden is a wonderful, timeless book about being true to yourself by bestselling author Christy Mandin. Already an instant New York Times Bestseller, an Indie Bestseller and an Indie Next Pick, it is getting these reviews: "This dare-to-be-different picture book blends beautifully with the kids-to-the-rescue story...leaves readers with much to think about."--Shelf Awareness, starred review
