  • ADU 0713: Is there a more affordable mapping software than Pix4D?
Today, we talk about mapping and modeling software.  While many pilots are training to compete in the mapping industry, many find that the software is too expensive of an investment.  Luckily, there are other options.  PhotoScan, for example, offers many of Pix4D's features at a much cheaper rate.   Best of all, the standard-edition licenses costs only $179.

Of course, the basic version of PhotoScan doesn't have all of the features of high-end software.  However, it is a great way to acclimate yourself with mapping software at a much cheaper rate.  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0712: Do I own the videos I post on SkyPixel?
Today, we talk about SkyPixel and content ownership. Do you own the videos that you post on SkyPixel?

Well, no. According to the Terms and Conditions listed on their website:

By submitting, posting, or publishing User Content on or through the Service, you grant DJI a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully paid, sub-licensable and transferable right and license to use, copy, host, store, transfer, display, publish, broadcast, transmit, perform, reproduce, modify, prepare derivative works from, distribute, or otherwise exploit your User Content, in whole or in part, in any media formats and through any media channels now known or hereafter developed, in connection with the Service and DJI’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof). In addition, you waive any so-called "moral rights" in your User Content.

Essentially, DJI is saying that, by posting your videos on SkyPixel, you are waiving all rights to control what happens to the videos you post there. However, there is a termination clause listed in the Terms and Conditions as well. The clause states:
The above licenses granted by you in User Content you submit, post, or publish on or through the Service terminate within a commercially reasonable period of time after you remove or delete User Content from the Service. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the license for legal archival/preservation purposes will continue indefinitely. Please note that removed User Content may be cached in search engine indices after removal and that DJI has no control over such caching.
Basically, the termination states that you may have the ability to regain control over your content if you delete your membership within a "commercially reasonable time period". While we're not exactly sure what constitutes a "commercially reasonable time period" (days, weeks?), you do have a chance at reclaiming full copyright over your content.

In short, SkyPixel can be a great tool for drone pilots. However, you should consider the ramifications before posting any content.  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0711: Which industries are paying for drone models?
Today, we talk about drone modeling.  Different from maps, models give their viewer a three-dimensional experience of a location.

Without a doubt, modeling is one of the most important skills a drone pilot can have right now.  Farmers, construction companies, golf courses and real estate agencies are all hiring drone pilots to make 3D models.  In addition to advertising, drone models help companies provide better services to their clients.

In order to help you understand the value of drone models, we discuss some of the industries that are using them.  Additionally, we talk about how training can help you make money as a drone modeler.  We hope this episode is helpful!  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0710: How do I apply for a daytime waiver to fly at night? (UPDATED)
A few weeks ago, we talked about obtaining a night waiver from the FAA.  Specifically, we offered some advice on getting a waiver to fly at night if you don't know the specific details of the operation.

At the time, it was relatively easy to obtain a waiver from the FAA (even without details like the specific drone or location).  However, some things have changed.  Obtaining a daytime waiver to fly at night has become a more detailed process.  Now, the portal asks you to be more specific in your request.

Take a look at the updated portal and enjoy the episode.  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0708: Is the DJI X7 useful for mapping and modeling?
Today, we discuss the DJI X7 and its potential for mapping and modeling.  Although we haven't used on yet, we talk to a lot of people in drone mapping who want to know if the X7 will provide any benefits.

Being that the X7 is equipped with a larger imaging sensor, has better dynamic range and can be paired with a variety of lenses, it appears that the camera will be useful for mapping and modeling.  Although it only shoots 2400 megapixels, the camera will provide much better maps than other cameras.  Additionally, the X7 can fly on an existing Inspire 2, a M200 series, or a number of other DJI drones.

There are, however, a few caveats to the X7 (tune in to find out).  Overall, however, we're excited to get our hands on one.  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0707: What does the National Defense Authorization Act mean for pilots?
Unfortunately, we've got some bad news.  In case you havn't heard, the president just signed off on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  Essentially, this bill undermines the work of John Taylor and reinstates mandatory drone registration.  In the past, the FAA's regulations stated that any drone weighing 5.5 lbs or more needed to be registered.  However, the NDAA now requires registration of any drone flying in federal airspace, no matter the size.

Today, we talk about what the National Defense Authorization Act, what it means for pilots and where it could go in the future.  Additionally, we talk about how it could interact with Aeroscope and have a huge effect on privacy.  We're looking forward to watching how this all plays out.  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0706: Can I film indoors without a Part 107?
Today, we talk about flying indoors without a Part 107.  We received a call from a pilot who wanted to know if it were legal for him to make money from indoor footage filmed without a license.

In short, the answer is yes.  You can, in fact, make money off of indoor footage without being a licensed pilot.  Because interiors are not navigable airspace, they are not maintained, controlled or regulated by the FAA.

However, you may face certain problems while flying your drone indoors.  For example, you'll need to make sure that GPS mode is turned off to avoid magnetic interference.  Additionally, you may want to buy some prop guards or cages to protect your drone.  Ultimately, there are some precautions you'll want to take but flying commercially indoors without a Part 107 is completely legal.  Thanks for the question.  Fly safe!

Recently, we've put out a bunch of content about instant airspace authorization.  While many pilots have successfully used LAANC to obtain instant authorization, we hear from many people who are doubtful.  Oftentimes, they want to know if this is a legitimate way to obtain airspace authorization.
