What Recorder to Buy?

Michael is looking at different portable audio recorders. Is there much of a difference between the Roland R-05, the Zoom H4n and the Zoom H5.

The Roland has a link and mic in (but not XLR). The H4n has two XLR inputs, and a line/mic in. The H5 has everything that the H4 has AND it has the ability to change the built in microphone. Speaking of those, they all have condensor microphones which can be used to record things on the road. If you are looking for the ability to record anything then the H4 and H5 are great choices. The H5 gives the ability to swap microphones and the ability to adjust levels is a little easier.

The Roland R-05 is $199

The H4n is $269

The Zoom H5 is $269

The H4 and H5 allow you to add "markers" which make it easy to find spots in the recording which may decrease your editing time.

It does seem weird that both models are the same price. I know at

In a nutshell, you tell the software what you want to be the loudest level, and it looks at the current loudest level and boosts it the difference - across the whole file. Compression is a little more specific.

Dave had someone complain as he made a quick mention about gun safety on his show about podcasting and got a complaint. Dave kept the wav file which made it easy to go back and edit out the part that Dave shouldn't have left in, and then republish.

In this episode we have a technical hiccup, but the show must go on. This means we start off with Jim as a caller until Dave's machine finally units updating itself and we get back to normal. We talk with Mike Deck of podcasthelpdesk.com and he talks about the new PowerPress update. Powerpress is a very popular plugin for wordpress that does the following:

1. Creates an iTunes compliant fed.

2. Puts a player on your website

3. Puts a play in a new link

Now there are new subscribe buttons and iTunes Search Engine Optimization tools (to help you get found in iTunes).

New Media Expo Speakers Update[24:00]

Updates are being announced in New Media Expo newsletter. Dave will check to see what he can and can't announce. It is interesting that Dave has asked some people who have not responded at all. Screencasting / Video Strategy [1:40]

Fred from skillsinscreencastsandpodcasts.com wants to know my strategy for using video and audio. Steve Stewart has a class called "how to use Screenflow" which you can use to make videos on your Mac, and you can use Camtasia on the PC. Audello has lots of bugs and I do not recommend it. If you have more than one show, it can really mess up your podcasting. I did get my refund, but I wouldn't use it now. Ringr.us is set to launch in January

Collaboration Tool Zoom [10:00]

Zoom.us is a great tool that is kind of a Go to Meeting Replacement. It offers great recording. Mike Phillips of computer2know.com has raved about this service. Jim is using to connect with people overseas.  

ITunes Being Out of Date [14:40]

John Wilkerson of  www.thewiredhomeschool.com wants to know if there is anything we can do to get iTunes to update its directory. There are times when your podcast is being outranked by a show that hasn't done an new episode in years. The quick answer is no. Ask your audience to review you. While nobody knows the exact algorythm, we believe total subsscribers, and total downloads are involved and there isn't much you can do about that but try to get more downloads andmore  subscribers.  

Why Free Podcasting Hosts May Not Work [24:10]

The host needs listeners to put advertising in front of them New podcasters don't have an audience yet. Once a podcaster gets an audience, they can get their own advertising and leave the service.
