  • Member Spotlight: Mark Corkins, MD, CNSC, FASPEN, AGAF, FAAP
This video honors Dr. Mark Corkins, Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Dr. Corkins said he was fortunate in that nutrition was a focus in every step of his training. In medical school, his biochemistry professor said that students didn’t get enough nutrition and was given an hour each week to teach it. He later found out this focus on nutrition was not the norm in medical training. Dr. Corkins works as an academic physician and loves to teach nutrition. He says there are still huge holes in nutrition knowledge, despite significant progress in recent years. There are still lots of questions that need answers. He advises junior faculty to pick one question and answer it well—do it right, and more questions will follow. He also shares how ASPEN has helped him advance and grow professionally.

  • Member Spotlight: Maitreyi Raman, MD, MSc, FRCPC
This video honors Dr. Maitreyi Raman, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. She is also the Medical Director of the Southern Alberta Home Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Program. After completing her nutrition fellowship around 2004, she noticed that there were very few nutrition-focused clinician/scientists within the gastroenterology landscape. She adds that her ability to find a female mentor in this field inspired and influenced her career path. Over the past 10 years, her research focus has shifted from enteral and parenteral nutrition to evaluating and accessing the role of dietary therapies, dietary components, and malnutrition in IBD. She encourages clinician/scientists to integrate nutrition into gastroenterology research reaching beyond enteral and parenteral nutrition to liver disease, IBD and beyond. Dr. Raman advises junior faculty to consider nutrition as a subspecialty, as it is still an under-represented field in gastroenterology with good career opportunity and career advancement.

  • Member Spotlight: Christian Stoppe, MD PhD
This video honors Dr. Christian Stoppe, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Würzburg in Germany. His journey to nutrition began when fellow ASPEN member, Dr. Daren Heyland, invited him out to dinner and asked for his opinion on a potential clinical trial collaboration. Dr. Stoppe’s overarching purpose for his research is to improve nutrition practice for patients in the ICU and increase its awareness in Europe, where its impact is underrecognized. He works on several clinical trials to evaluate the potential significance of different micronutrients and vitamins with a particular passion for Vitamin C. Dr. Stoppe advises junior faculty to have a team where one can readily reach out to critically discuss research questions. It’s important to learn from people from different specialties and viewpoints to jointly develop well-informed strategies.
