This week a new documentary from Heather Barrett about a groundbreaking project in Newfoundland to bring a photographer, a songwriter, sex workers and the police together to try to find common ground.
For the survivors of sex work, revealing their secret selves — the ones they used to hide from the world — is a step toward figuring out a better system for those still tied to the industry.
Songwriter Amelia Curran met with the women and admits struggling to craft a song that resolved the tension between female exploitation and a woman’s freedom to choose her own path. The song Curran eventually wrote is called "Shouldn’t Need Sayin" and that's the name of the documentary.
