• model-year 2013-17 Explorers may experience a seized cross-axis ball problems. Dealers will inspect and replace as needed.  Ford will begin notifying owners Aug. 23. Ford also said it’s providing a customer satisfaction program for vehicles not sold or registered in corrosion states. Recalls for the week:

• 2015-16 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. The roof rail airbag inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture. A separated inflator end cap or rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components propelling into the cabin, increasing the risk of injury or a crash. To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the left and right-side roof rail airbag modules for free. Chevy and GMC parent automaker GM will send interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk Aug. 16; owners will receive a second notice when a remedy is available. • 2017-19 Chevrolet Silverado 2500s and 3500s and GMC Sierra 2500s and 3500s equipped with Duramax 6.6-liter diesel engines and the optional cord. An electrical short circuit may cause a occur in the engine block heater cable or in the terminals that connect the heater cable to the block heater, increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers will disable the block heater for free. Chevrolet and GMC parent GM will provide free replacement block heaters and cords under a separate customer satisfaction campaign, though for trucks under a previous recall, the heater cord will be replaced and rerouted for free. GM will begin notifying owners Aug. 16, but those with further questions can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, GMC at 800-462-8782, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236
• 2004-07 Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks. A shattered plastic emblem could strike both the driver and occupants in the event of the steering wheel’s airbag going off, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will simply replace the airbag module cover for free. Mazda will begin notifying owners Aug. 28, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 800-222-5500, option No. 4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236

• Nissan is recalling certain 2020-2021 Titan, Titan XD, and Versa vehicles. The front right and/or left turn signal bulb can crack and fail to illuminate.
• GM is recalling certain 2021 Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave vehicles. During service by dealers, certain vehicles may have received incorrect air bag calibration software that may affect frontal airbag deployment.
• Nissan is recalling certain 2021 Rogue vehicles. The second-row upper tether wires may have been improperly welded to the seatback frame, preventing a child seat from being securely anchored. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems."
• Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2018 AMG GT vehicles. The bonding between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the flange may be insufficient, which could result in driveshaft separation.

In the news: this is from M-Dot: Flash floods can occur within a few minutes or up to six hours after excessive rainfall. Never drive through a flooded area, as the road bed may be washed away and you may not know how deep the water is. If you encounter a flooded road – TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!

Most flood deaths occur at night and when people become trapped in automobiles that stall in areas that are flooded. If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. The rising water may engulf the vehicle and the occupants inside. • Backup cameras have been a federal mandate on all cars since the 2019 model year. All gasoline engine vehicles can use E10. Currently, only flex-fuel and light-duty vehicles with a model year of 2001 or newer are approved by the EPA to use E15. Flex-fuel vehicles can use any ethanol-gasoline blends up to E85.

• Ethanol helps the fuel meet federal air-pollution regulations. It reduces tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzene, and fine particulates.

• Ethanol contributes to fulfilling the national energy independence goals presented in the 2005 Energy Policy Act and extended under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

• Ethanol is a powerful octane booster—a fuel additive that prevents the fuel charge from preigniting in the cylinder, which leads to engine knocking and poor performance.

• With 33 percent less energy content than gasoline, ethanol actually lowers your gas mileage.

• Ethanol is known to ruin small engines, especially two-stroke, because of its tendency to separate from the gasoline.

• By growing corn for ethanol, farmers reduce the land being used to grow corn for food, raising the consumer price of corn.

• Ethanol is highly corrosive, forcing auto manufacturers to use more expensive stainless-steel components.
