Once, a young man approached Ramana Maharshi and expressed doubt about the existence of God. When asked the reason for his doubt, he said, ‘As long as God is not visible, there can be no faith in His existence’. Then Maharshi, with a gentle smile, said, ‘Let me ask you a question. Does intelligence exist within you?’ When the young man replied, ‘There is no doubt about it’, Maharshi said, ‘But I do not see it. How can I determine its existence?’ From this statement, the young man understood that he should think in a similar manner regarding the existence of God. Hence, his doubt about God's existence vanished.

Once, in the kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, also known as the "Lion of Punjab," some spies brought news that a group of looters was plundering the city of Peshawar. When the king summoned his general and asked how the looters could enter the city, the general replied with concern, mentioning that the looters were three times in number compared to their soldiers. Without saying a word, the king immediately set off for Peshawar with 150 soldiers to annihilate the enemy. Witnessing his bravery and swordsmanship, the terrified looters soon fled from the city. From that moment on, the general resolved that he would never again lose his composure.

The priest of Bhairavi, holding a trident, approached to kill him. At that moment, the sound of "Waheguru" was heard. Upon hearing this, the priest underwent a remarkable change. Observing this, the leader of the tribal people angrily asked, "Who are you?" Guru Nanak replied, "I am a human like you." The highly detached sage Maharshi Ramana, through the study of religious scriptures, had made a vow that he would not accumulate anything more than necessary. He owned only one loincloth, which was worn out. Seeing Maharshi sewing the loincloth, some devoted disciples felt very distressed and offered to give a new loincloth. Maharshi smilingly said, ‘There are many people in my surroundings, who shiver through the night due to the cold. See God in the destitute and the poor. This is the essence of our religious scriptures’. From then on, the devotees dedicated their lives to the service of the poor and the destitute.

At an international conference, a certain American couple invited Swami Vivekananda to their home. They made arrangements for excellent food and sleeping accommodations for him. When Swami Vivekananda was resting on a cot around midnight, upon seeing the couple's well-organized arrangements he started to imagine the condition of Indians. Thinking about the impoverished, underprivileged and poorly clothed Indians, he became deeply saddened. Remembering the countless Indians suffering from poverty and hardship, tears welled up in his eyes.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a great scholar and very compassionate. One day, near the college, a worker was lying down suffering from fever. Vidyasagar took him home, called a doctor, cleaned his body, changed his clothes, and did everything himself. When a relative saw this and asked, ‘Is he your relative?’. Vidyasagar replied, ‘Yes, he is my relative. I purify the inner self with knowledge and he cleans the outer body with sweeping. Therefore, we both have the same role. Hence, he is my brother’.

Once, a war was going on between two countries. Because there were newly hatched pigeon chicks in his helmet, the king went to the battlefield without wearing it. Seeing this, the enemy king asked for the reason. After learning everything, the enemy king admired the peaceful nature of his rival and said, ‘How can efforts resulting in the death of countless soldiers be justified by war? Wise men should not act without thought. Let us together maintain peace’. Since then, the pigeon has been considered a symbol of peace.

Before his coronation, a young prince asked his Guru, ‘How does a king become powerful?’. The Guru replied with three points - ‘The people should not suffer from lack of food, there should not be a shortage of weapons in the country, and the people's trust in the king's governance should not be lost. In all three cases, the welfare of the people should be the primary goal of governance. Kingship is not a sign of power, but a position of service to the people’. Satisfied with the excellent teaching, the prince bowed to his Guru with devotion and left.
