In this (now) trilogy exploring the world of self-help 'mogul' Rachel Hollis, Kate reads a handful of listener emails and walks through the 4-part Venn diagram she's been building since October, mapping the similarities between cults, conservative religions, multi-level marketing schemes, and large-scale self-help gurus that hold conferences like Rachel Hollis and her former 'hero,' Tony Robbins (remember, "I own you?"). In the first hour, Kate reads emails while analyzing Rachel's RISE conference and how the format compares to historical examples of known manipulative marketing strategies (e.g. low-key mind control). She walks through the psychological tactics tied to her former 'hero,' like aggressively teaching psychotherapeutic concepts in his favor (reframing, limited beliefs), resurrecting trauma, using NLP, hosting LGATs, etc. After many listeners reached out asking for more time to write in, she decided she'd air this episode first, but part 3 will be all e-mails. Overall, Kate's exploring her hypothesis that she can link many large-scale self-help & motivational speakers to being deeply rooted in some form of hybrid MLM/evangelical preaching/self-development movement, that when used for nefarious reasons can turn into cults, but best case turn into snake oil empires making professional manipulators and paraphrasers into multimillionaires at the expense of our mental health, preying on generations of vulnerable people who are being told (and sold) that they are 'Made for More.' Enjoy?

A Rachel Hollis deep dive. In this episode, Kate dives into the recent controversy surrounding the self-help empire of Rachel Hollis, who is a wildly successful motivational speaker, podcast host, CEO of Rise (and formerly HollisCo), among other things, but is probably most well-known for being the author of NYT best sellers "Girl, Wash Your Face" and "Girl, Stop Apologizing." Kate starts with analysis of the troubling dialogue and caption of her now-deleted video and also now-deleted first apology last week. Then, she discusses the problem with "made for more" culture, especially in the context of the RISE conference and support of the MLM industry that preys on vulnerable people via her prosperity gospel-adjacent business coaching. Then Kate talks through her journey with what she's found troubling about Hollis' content, detailing how she thinks it fits in the broader 2010s self-help zeitgeist of #girlboss culture, and shares her journey in how these movements have shaped her view of feminism and empowerment. In the second episode, Kate will read more listener-submitted emails, wanting to give her take so she can open up the floor to give her yours. Please submit any feedback, stories of being in the RH fandom, or thoughts on women's self-help to [email protected] subject line RH. All opinions in this episode are of Kate Kennedy's or listeners that submitted emails to Be There in Five Podcast.

This week, Kate snorkels through a variety of topics, with the core theme being overlooked and/or forgotten internet drama. She discusses Cinnamon Toast Crunch gate, sexism in Consumer Packaged Goods, talks about the role of cancel culture in the Bible, meanders through music with her favorite SAT words, talks about how you know influencers have 'made it,' then dives into one of her favorite internet communities: Candle Culture. From funny/forgotten candle rant youtubers, to her perceptions of Bath & Body Works vs. Yankee Candle vs. Dyptique, to the impact of COVID on the candle industry, aggressive reviews, pretentious descriptions and more -- it's safe to say Kate spends a lot of time *waxing* poetic in this candle-forward episode. She also talks about one of her favorite stories that yielded an exciting period of internet mystery and drama surrounding an epic pop star catfish. Overall, fun, lighthearted, and hopefully fast moving-- Enjoy!

This week, Kate has the pleasure of being joined by one of her favorite microinfluencers and women's health advocates, Ailsa Emmel from @_happygocurly_. Ailsa and Kate talk about so many topics, from the ups and downs of instagram, to how she got started, to women's health Wednesday, cancel culture, Kate's fears about childbirth, sex ed, and more. Since Ailsa is a Certified Nurse Midwife, a large majority of this conversation is dedicated to discussing women's health, being open about our bodies, and learning more about Ailsa's experience spending her days with different women in some of their most vulnerable moments. Kate loved this episode and conversation and hopes you do too!

This week, Kate salutes one of the most iconic magazine series of our time: Seventeen's Trauma-rama. First, she discusses Meghan & Harry's upcoming interview, then does a brief Are You Afraid of the Dark detour, followed by reading from old Seventeen & YM magazines she bought off of eBay from their juiciest embarrassing stories sections. Following that, she reads crowd-sourced 'things that are embarrassing for no reason' anecdotes from listeners and discusses the discomfort of, well, just generally existing. Enjoy!
