I believe that one of the main sources of fear when it comes to childbirth and labour is fear of the unknown. Given the complex nature of childbirth, now knowing how things may unfold can be pretty scary, especially for first time mums. One way to alleviate these fears is to educate yourself around labour and childbirth. But this too can seem overwhelming at times. There are so many books and so many online resources to choose from it can be hard to decide where to start. Then it can be hard just to find the time to actually do your research and the reading that goes with it.

Beautiful Births documentary

But now this educational task just got easier with the arrival of the Beautiful Births documentary by Jacqui Blue. The Beautiful Births documentary is a one hour documentary on childbirth and labour to help you start your educational journey. During the Beautiful Births documentary, director Jacqui Blue shares birth stories from several women as well as interviews with birth professionals to show the other side of birth, a more positive side.

When I came across the film I decided to get in touch with Jacqui to see if she would come on the podcast and she said yes! So I'm thrilled to be able to share with you the chat that I had with Jacqui Blue, the director of the Beaitiful Births documentary. When Jacqui first had the idea for the documentary, she tested the waters to see if there was interest in such a film. She never expected the incredible appetite that was shown. In a week she received 2,000 views for her video which was only shared through her personal facebook page. Within months it grew to half a million. Her trailer is currently showing nearly 5 million views on YouTube. You can watch it below.

This confirmed to Jacqui, that she did indeed need to complete her Beautiful Births documentary.

During our chat, Jacqui shares

her 4 very different birth experiences which include twins delivered by c-section, two hospital VBAC births and a beautiful birth center birth

her reasons for wanting to create such a film

the importance of being educated around birth and labour

how she was affected by her negative birth experiences and what that taught her

Jacqui Blue is a documentarian, filmmaker, director, writer, photographer, artist and mother of five sons. Before putting herself through film school, she had spent the greater part of the last decade working as a stay at home mom and wife. Having had a Cesarean section with her twins, followed by two very different but successful hospital VBACs, which was then followed by a water birth in a birth center, Jacqui developed a passion for natural birth and fell into "alternative" or "attachment" parenting styles. When she became annoyed with the programming available to women about pregnancy and birth, she decided it was about time someone made a film that showed another, a different, a more humane way to bring children into the world.
